Description

Haunting Hysteria: Wharton, freeman and the Ghosts of Masculinity” is the title of the story I read this week. The story is authored by Lori Jirousek and published by the University of Illinois press. The book is about the conflicting and contradictory behavior of human, where they practice an act that will lead them into failure, yet their motive is to gain success.

I personally have observed one thing about human beings, especially those who are religiously incline. They all talk about heaven and want to get there, however; none of them want to die, and it is very clear there is no heaven on earth and one cannot go to the other world passing through death. That’s the nature of human.

In this story, Jirousek narrates about how Edith Wharton and like-minded individuals use fiction as a tool to change certain happenings within the society. According to Jirousek (1999) “Recent critics have investigated how Edith Wharton, Mary Wilkins Freeman and other American women writers have used supernatural fiction subtly to challenge women gender role restrictions” (p.31).

In my opinion, gender inequality is a canker that must be done away with. In one breadth, everyone talks about bridging the gap in the inequality about gender, yet those who are benefiting from these inequalities have the power to bridge it. They will not even dare put things in order to bridge that gap because their success depends on the inequality. Society see women as victims in this regard, however; when we take a holistic look at this case in its broader perspectives, society might just be wrong.

This is a very interesting story that I encourage every lover of literature and research to have a read. It carries a whole lot of information that will actually bring about a change in the mindset of individuals across the globe.
