Formal Essay Proposal

Motive - Subject - Topic - Question - Thesis Movement In order to propose a formal essay, the preliminary work of finding a statement of motive, subject, topic, question, and a clear thesis statement is very important. For the formal essay that is being proposed for English 1090: Telling Stories, the motive of the paper is to highlight the common consensus that stories are typically seen as simply a form of entertainment, despite the underlying fact that stories play a large role in bringing awareness to societal issues, a viewpoint that is often overlooked. This paper will also use the subjective idea that stories raise awareness of societal issues and will discuss that the cultural impact of stories is far greater than it seems. Furthermore, the topic being addressed is the subject of societal issues and the topic of societal issues relating to the hypersexualization of females. The question that will be answered by this paper through various disciplines is, “are stories effective in bringing awareness to societal issues relating to the hypersexualization of females? Why or why not?” The thesis that this paper will discuss is as we can see in a reading of Jamaica Kincaid’s “Girl”, stories raise awareness of societal issues relating to the hypersexualization of females.

Sample Paragraph “...On Sundays try to walk like a lady and not like the slut you are so bent on becoming…” (Kincaid), a mother scorns her young daughter. Emphasizing all of the important skills her daughter must acquire to lead a successful life, one thing her mother ensures she avoids is to appear as if though she is enjoying herself at all - which would lead to being disparagingly labeled as a slut. In today’s society, this may be perceived as a normal conversation between mother and daughter. The hypersexualization of females is continually rising, leading to women feeling insecure with their sexuality, and limiting themselves to fit in with society’s norms of how a woman should behave. “Girl” is a prime example that stories raise awareness of societal issues relating to the hypersexualization of females. Along with discussing the elements of “Girl”, this essay will also discuss the Disney princess effect and female characterization in stories that are (typically) written by male authors. Argument Diagram Premise 1: A woman’s reputation or respectability determines the quality of her life in the community, as shown in Girl. Premise 2: Disney princesses are shown in stories as omnipresent, pastel packaged franchises of slender-waisted fairy-tale heroines. Premise 3: Stereotypic attitudes persist and are evident in the stories of young children. Premise 4: These findings may be attributed to the sex-role stereotypic models presented to children. Conclusion: Stories raise awareness of societal issues relating to the hypersexualization of females
