Improved Laundry Facilities and their Benefit to GCU

Julianna Havar Grand Canyon University ENG 106: English Composition II Dajana Romero Dec. 3, 2021

2 Improved Laundry Facilities and their Benefit to GCU No one enjoys doing their laundry, but it is even worse when the washer or dryer does not clean or dry properly. While Grand Canyon University has some of the best dorm options in the United States, the laundry facilities lack in quality, there are laundry rooms on every floor with two to three washers and dryers each, yet students will often find themselves washing/drying their laundry twice in order for their clothes to be clean. This would be less of a problem if students did not pay $1.25 per washer/dryer, which means that a student will pay $2.50 per one load of laundry, which is not a lot but if a student has to double wash their laundry, they will end up paying between $3.73 to $5.00 for one load of clean and dry laundry. This has led to students doing their laundry off-campus, either by friends, relatives, or laundry services around campus, and this has cost GCU some of its revenue that they could have gotten through their laundry facilities. As a result, Grand Canyon University should update and improve their laundry facilities because it would have more students do their laundry on campus, which would increase the revenue since students pay for laundry services, and it would better GCU’s reputation for being on-campus student-friendly. The specific goal of this proposal is to have more efficient laundry facilities on-campus at Grand Canyon University. The most efficient way to go about this is to start with the oldest dorms which will have the most outdated laundry facilities and work through each dorm until all of the laundry facilities have been updated. This would fall under both the Director of Housing, Director of Facilities, and GCU’s finance board. Besides the purchase of the machines, the installation would be another cost to consider, GCU currently has one or more laundry rooms on each floor of their dorms. Depending on the model of the machines that will be ordered, the costs will range between $270,000 to $550,000, installation cost is another factor to consider (Kiernan,

3 2004). While the installation cost will vary based on which services the University decides to use, it could be a project implemented by GCU to further Campus-Community relations, by hiring a local company GCU would support the surrounding community. Between both the number of laundry facilities and installation time, this project would take 1 to 3 months to complete. After updating the facilities would be self sufficient in cost, the maintenance would be paid through the revenue that would come from the laundry machines. Updated washing and drying machines on campus would have more students doing their laundry on campus which would lead to a higher profit coming from the laundry facilities. As of right now, students on campus pay $1.25 per laid per machine, which should add up to $2.50 per load, yet it does not, this is because students will wash one load twice in order to get the desired cleanness of their clothes. Because of this, there have been a lot of student complaints and has led students to do their laundry off campus to get their clothes 100% clean. With better, more efficient, laundry machines, students will once more do their laundry on campus, while they then would pay $2.50 per load, and not the $3.75-$5.00 that they are now. GCU’s revenue would increase because of the influx of students that would be doing their laundry on campus. Even though students would only pay $2.50 per load, but a significant increase of students would do their laundry on campus if the facilities were to be updated. Thus, creating more profit for GCU. By doing this, Grand Canyon University’s reputation of being student-friendly to those living on campus would increase greatly. Doing laundry is part of every person’s life, and seldom do people like to do it, especially if the clothes do not get cleaned properly the first time it is washed. But by having GCU update these facilities, it would greatly improve the student’s life on campus and thus would result in the further improvement of the university’s reputation. According to Ms. Bingham: “It's a great marketing tool”, referring to updated laundry facilities at

4 the College of Engineering in Needham, Mass., stating that these are often included in housing brochures and campus tours in order to appeal to more students that would like to live on campus (Kiernan, 2004, para. 4). Housing is also often the deciding factor, both students and parents are concerned about not only the quality of the education but also the living conditions. Grand Canyon has one of the best dorm ratings in the nation and would continue to improve their ranking by having new laundry rooms. One of the biggest obstacles for the installation of updated laundry facilities is the maintenance, the laundry facilities are used by a lot of students, and with these newer facilities, they will be used even more. This will result in the machines being run down and having to do a lot of maintenance in order to keep the facilities running smoothly. However, this need for continuous maintenance will allow GCU to hire more student workers, creating new job opportunities for students (Ajayi, et la., 2015). This would especially be a great opportunity for technology and engineering students who will learn about the mechanics of these machines and how to keep them updated and working properly. While the maintenance of these machines will be high, the opportunities it will present for both the University and the students outweigh the obstacles it presents. In addition, the cost of updating the facilities would in time be reimbursed through the revenue that the new facilities will bring. Overall, having GCU improve their laundry rooms will not only enhance their reputation, bring more students, and more profit, but it also provides new job opportunities for students on campus in areas such as technology, and engineering. If Grand Canyon University fails to address this issue, students will continue to do their laundry off-campus. Having GCU’s students do their laundry on campus is important to the university’s reputation and benefit because it brings revenue that the school can invest in other departments. The university will continue to

5 miss out on the opportunity to not only gain more profit but will result in losing more money because the current facilities will wear down with continuous use, making them even more ineffective in cleaning laundry. Studies have shown that when student satisfaction increases, due to the decreased concerned about their laundry, academic performance increases and a significant decrease in complaints filed against the management among others (Phillip, et la., 2018).
