Description

Surname 1 Student’s Name: Ana Caceres. Instructor’s Name: Prof. Howard. Course Name: English Composition Date: 09/28/2021 Do High School students benefit from working to earn money? Education is an essential part of one's personality. It aids in building character and adapting to lifestyle changes due to inventions and technology. Additionally, working improves one's livelihood as one explores their creativity in their field of interest. It is common for high school students to work part-time for money. That sparks a debate on whether or not it is necessary. Contrary to popular belief, high school students do not benefit from working to earn money; working while in school poses numerous disadvantages to students that outweigh the benefits. First, part-time jobs play a significant role in distracting students from schoolwork. Working students have less time for studying, homework, group discussions, and other schoolrelated activities, leading to poor grades. In addition, employment constraints students' resting time as they spend all their free time working (White, 2). The exhaustion makes them more prone to absenteeism, less attentive in class, and prevents their involvement in school cocurricular activities. Working and studying simultaneously also leads to trouble balancing school work and employment obligations, leading to poor health. However, research shows that the effects of part-time employment depend on how long a student works. Students working more than 20 hours per week are more likely to engage in drug abuse and have lower grade point averages than those who work ten or fewer hours a week (White, 1). All these factors distract the

Surname 2 student from school work leading to poor performance (White, 2). It may be argued that working makes one make a name for themselves and that achieving success at work will boost an individual's confidence, but that is temporary if a student cannot ensure academic excellence. Additionally, having a good reputation as a working student is short-lived if one engages in drug abuse, is constantly tired and stressed due to balancing work with the school. Finally, the pressure and constant exhaustion are likely to hurt one's performance in both work and school. Most people argue that part-time jobs are good as they offer work experience. However, a high school student does not need work experience. They need to ensure academic excellence to enable them to make appropriate career choices. Therefore, every high school student's primary concern should be to gain experience that impresses college recruiters who do not look for work experience. They look for exceptional talent and outstanding SAT and ACT scores. So students should spend their free time studying for SAT and ACTs and taking Advanced Placement classes that enable them to get into solid colleges (White, 1). Additionally, recruiters look for students with leadership skills and experience in volunteer work, hence the need for students to engage in extra-curricular activities such as volunteer work and sports, which can earn them sports scholarships. One may argue that parttime jobs can earn students extra income for their upkeep. However, most of them work minimal wage jobs that yield little savings, especially after factoring in transport expenses. The little earnings are not worth compromising one's future. In conclusion, high school students don't benefit from working to earn money. The cons outweigh the pros. It is myopic as one sacrifices the long-term benefits of concentrating on school work and eventually making a few dollars every week. Education is work, and it demands

Surname 3 a lot of attention and dedication. Besides, most people cannot serve two masters simultaneously, and for those who do, the lesser one may take precedence, and the main one suffers.
