Introduction A. Thesis Statement Jack London uses the deadly situation of an unnamed protagonist and dog trekking across
the Yukon Trail in negative 75 degree weather and the treacherous setting in To Build a Fire t o convey moral and Biblical teachings, such as pride and friendship.
Jack London uses an unnamed narrator and the deadly environment of the Yukon in “To Build a Fire” to convey moral teachings from the Bible; because of pride and ignorance the narrator
B. The Jack London's story To Build a Fire is the story of a mans journey across the Yukon wasteland that can relate to any mans view on immortality and that man’s place in the universe. 1. Make sure to add a hook 2. unusual detail- Relation to Dante’s Inferno (Russell M. Hillier) 3. Commedia then our tidy, traditional understanding of London as a long-standing, dedicated Socialist who was condescending toward, if not scornful of, spiritual and religious matters becomes problematic or, at the very least, open to reassessment.’” ( Crystal Beard and Dantean Influence in Jack London’s “To Build a Fire” Page 176) II.
Body A. Argument One- Moral of Pride 1. The unnamed protagonist and his fight with who is right against the old-timer who tells him that he should not go out without someone else. And at the end he says “You were right, old hoss; you were right.” realizing that he should have taken that old-timers advice. 2. Find Quote where he says the a man is not a man if he can’t hike by his self. 3. Quote- Proverbs 16:18 “ Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.” 4. Quote- Proverbs 12:15 “The way of a fool seems right to him, but a wise man takes advice” (Relate this to how the Protagonist will not take advice from the man and that ends up killing him but if he had listened he would have lived” B. Argument Two- Friendship 1. The friendship or lack of between the dog and the man. 2. Why does the man like to be alone

3. What does that mean in relation with death C. Argument Three- Relationship between the setting and Hell 1. Talk about the setting of Snow and cold relating to Dante’s Pit of Hell where “he would have found a frozen subterranean lake blasted by biting wings” (Crystal Beard and Dantean Influence in Jack London’s “To Build a Fire” Page 173) 2. “In Structural terms the story has a repetitive, nightmarish quality as ‘the man’ makes three desperate ventures to build a fire that are each time frustrated- First, by having the fire ‘blotted out’ by an ‘avalanche’ of snow(1309); second, by having his book of sulphur matches extinguished in one fell swoop(1310-11); and third, by having’ the nucleus of the little fire’ snuffed out by a ‘large piece of green moss’ (1311). D. If not enough make a counter argument toward the Relationship between the setting and Hell. III.
Conclusion A. Summary of main points or reasons B. Restate Thesis statement C. Personal comment
