Description

Shelbie King Psy255 Comparison of theorist’s essay Lori Cooper Jack Sparrow Jack sparrow was a male, he was born in the early 1690’s on a pirate ship. He was of English descent. He had brown eyes, with brown/black hair, and a height about 5 foot 10 inches. He died in 1729 by being ate by the kraken. His family includes his father (Edward Teague), Jack (paternal uncle), Captain “ace” Brannigan (uncle), “quick draw” McFleming(aunt),and many others. Jack sparrow held many titles throughout his life including, pirate lord if the Caribbean Sea, captain, first mate, cabin boy, and many others Sparrow was also known by many names throughout his life including, Mr. Sparrow Jack, Jacky boy, Jacques, Senor Sparrow, and many more Occupations that Sparrow held include, caption of ships and crew member of ships. Some of these Ships include, The Barnacle, The Grand Barnacle, The Koldunya, and The troubadour, Jack sparrow was also involved in many battles at sea including, Destruction of the British warship mutiny on the La Fleur De la Mort, mutiny of the New Orleans. Attack on the misty Lady and Battle of the Devil’s triangle, Jack Sparrow) Jack’s early life included many things. Jacks mom’s head was shrunken and given to Sparrow as a gift. Jack became a captain of a pirate ship in a drastic way, the caption of the ship

he was on was killed. Sparrow mistakenly released slaves and got branded as an punishment At one-point Sparrow’s crew left him stranded on a Island and left him for dead, it took Sparrow 8 years to regain control of his ship (everything we know about Jack sparrow’s early life). Jack spent most of his early life learning to be a pirate Jack got strict punishment numerous times and it caused him to run away at an early age Jack taught himself how to shoot a gun and got lessons on how to use a sword Had gotten nailed to a coffin and thrown in water, all thanks to his father (Jack Sparrow- A brief telling). Sparrow experienced some very traumatic events as a child which might require him to receive therapy to address and help him through there experiences. Sparrow could have undiagnosed mental illnesses like depression or anxiety. A few reasons that Sparrow might be sent to therapy are , the possibility of him having behavioral problems, the chance he could have depression or anxiety, he could gain a substance abuse problem, he could have stress, he could have social problems, he could have legal problems, he could have low self-esteem, he experienced trauma, and he can be experiencing grief (Top ten reasons teens go to therapy) Sparrow obviously experienced trauma as a child with growing up as a pirate and his harsh pirate training, also he experienced trauma by his crew leaving him for dead which could cause lasting problems with Sparrow’s mental health. Sparrow seems to not have friends or every many friends if any, he seems to be enemies with everyone he comes across, so therapy could help him with these social problems he is experiencing. Sparrow seems to be experiencing Greif from his mother’s death, and therapy could help him over come this problem. Sparrow is experiencing mental health problems because of the way his life has been, and because he has not seeked help from a professional before. A good example of how Sparrows mental health can be identified is through Freuds theory of Personality. Freud believes that your

personality is affected by your different stages of consciousness, which include, the conscious, the preconscious, and the unconscious (burger, chapter 3). The most important part of consciousness when studying mental health is unconsciousness. The unconscious consists of most of people’s thoughts (burger, chapter3). People might push stuff out of their mind, so they do not have to think about or face the problem at hand, but the unconscious stores their problems. In order to properly treat and diagnose mental illness, you need to withdraw the thoughts from the unconscious mind and address them. There are many other Psychologists and other principles to explain Sparrows mental illnesses, one of these Psychologists being Erik Erikson. Erik Erikson’s view is Ego Psychology. Erickson believed ego is the center to personality. (Burger, chapter5). Erikson addressed that people’s personality development happens throughout their lives, in 8 stages, and never ends until they die (Burger, chapter 5). Erikson believes that if a person does not get through a stage properly it could cause mental problems and could result in the need for therapy to correct this error the person experienced transferring between stages (Burger chapter 5). The stages that sparrow probably had trouble transferring between are, basic trust versus mistrust, autonomy versus shame, and initiative versus guilt. Basic trust versus mistrust, in this stage establishes your trust for others like your parents and your sense of being cared for and loved (Burger, Chapter5). Sparrow had a strained relationship with his parents which could have caused a problem in this stage for Sparrow that was not properly addressed and taken care of. Autonomy versus shame, in this stage children explore the world and become more independent. Jack did not have that independence. (burger, Chapter5). Sparrow could have had a hard time transitioning through this stage because his parents were set in their ways and were teaching him how to be a pirate, this could of caused him to not develop independence or his true self properly. Initiative versus guilt.,

in this stage a child begins to interact with other children, and they learn to resolve conflicts properly (Burger, chapter5). Sparrow could have had trouble transitioning out of this stage because he had a lack of interaction with children and he never learned to properly resolve conflicts. In his adult life he resolves conflict by fighting and having battles with other pirates. Sparrow could really benefit from some therapy.
