Jung Yook Ban Professor Knight English 1B 2 November 2018 There’s more to College than Parties Many college students have different definitions of “Friday nights.” For some of them, it might be resting in their bed and watching some of their favorite Netflix shows. As for others, it might be going partying with their friends. Although partying can be fun, it can also be really dangerous because students frequently drink more alcohol than their body can handle. It’s sad to see how a lot of students aren’t taking advantage of on campus events when these social opportunities can allow them to have a better college experience. Personally, I believe sporting events should be an alternative to partying for students because they might have a chance to see some important moments and celebrations in college sports history. A major issue is that many college individuals don’t make memories at parties because they consume too much alcohol. One consequence that occurs from alcohol overdose is that students experience hangovers. A hangover is a headache or nausea that occurs when someone drinks too much liquor. “Not surprisingly, 60-75% of college students experience at least one hangover a year, 27% report 1-2 hangovers, and 34% report 12-51 hangovers” (Howland). Hangovers appear to be more common than some people might expect. The fact that 34% of college students experienced 12-51 hangovers shows that their body doesn’t have a lot of energy to be productive. Having too many hangovers can cause students to miss out on important

celebrations such as homecoming. Homecoming is an event no one should skip because it’s a big tradition that’s known for welcoming back their students to school. This is an opportunity where students can make an important moment by dancing the night away and making new friends. If students attend one homecoming, there is a good chance that they might go back to this event again because college homecomings make their students feel special. One sporting event that can replace parties is basketball games on campus. Going to these games is a good way to relieve one’s stress because individuals can take time off from studying in order to show some school spirit. Sporting events can be very entertaining when one hears the students and announcers getting hyped during the games. Sami Khan, a freshman at UCR, quotes “The UCR Women’s soccer game against Denver was really exciting. The fans and I were cheering the whole game because both teams were playing solid offense and defense. When UCR finally scored in the second half, the the announcers and I got really excited and joyful because my school was the only team to score the entire game” (Khan). When many fans are consistently cheering on their players, it shows how intense sporting events can get. This win made UCR’s women soccer team start their Big West Conference undefeated. In fact, they started off the season with one of the best records ever. “The UC Riverside women’s soccer team is of to one of its best starts in school history. Unbeaten at 9-0-1, the Highlanders have showcased a stellar defense and plenty of depth while being led by a senior group” (Steele). Having this unbelievable record was one of the biggest moment for UCR. Although this university was looked down upon by many coaches in the Big West Conference, the team worked really hard to be in the position they were in. The Highlanders, who finished tied for

second in the conference a year ago and lost in the conference tournament semifinals, were picked seventh in this year’s coaches preseason poll” (Steele). These  moments can never be recreated because it’s extremely difficult for a team to win nine consecutive games in any sport. College students should always come out to sporting events because they might never know if they witness their sports team destroying their competition. Sporting events can be full of mysteries because one never knows when a player might score the game winning shot to leave the crowd starstruck. Attending college football games can also be a great alternative for partying. The aggressiveness each players bring to the court shows how much they care about their fans and school’s reputation. This permits their student section to scream their lungs out and have a great time. Madison McKesson, a junior at University of Miami, talked about how football games are more exciting than partying. “I don’t understand why students from other colleges don’t attend their football games even if they’re not good. I love watching my school play because they always play with such passion and dedication. One thing that makes our games great is that they have this unique celebration called the Turnover Chain, a chain given to players that steal the football from the opposing team. It gets the crowd hyped every time they see this because this was a very prestigious award many Miami players couldn’t accomplish” (McKesson).

The special thing about this chain is that it is not just a regular chain. In fact, this is a cuban chain that costs at least a year of college tuition.“With that said, Miami’s commitment to the turnover

chain goes well beyond having it ready on the sideline for every turnover, they’ve poured some serious money into the 2018 version according to Canes Insider. According to their report, the new Miami turnover chain has a value just shy of $100,000” (Samuels). A lot of these football players wanted to wear this chain to embrace their love for Miami and for bragging rights. These chains were significant because it symbolizes Miami’s community culture. The turnover chain is considered to be one of the greatest things to happen in football history. One thing that makes this celebration so unique is because when fans saw this happening they could tell that Miami players were having the time of their life. “Miami made it cool for players to celebrate themselves for a minute. The turnover chain is a moment to make it all about you, while your teammates are your hype men. It’s genius, really” (Yousefi). The chain was a huge momentum shifter because it was one of the biggest factor why Miami’s football team was ranked as the 10th best football school in 2017-2018. This is the best record Miami has as a football team. Miami students that attended these football games got a chance to see Miami taking small steps for a historical record and a potential historical celebration. This chain is so popular that it even Tywan Martin, an associate professor of kinesiology and sports science, expressed how he felt about this. He considers this celebration as one of the most thrilling symbol in college football. “I salute the football program in how they have carefully cleverly branded the Turnover Chain. We’ve essentially captured the attention of the entire country for being who and what we are-excellence” (Jr). This chain has received so much coverage all over social media and the internet. The celebration even caught the attention of another highly ranked, college football team, LSU. In fact, LSU’s football teams went as far as mocking their celebration in one of their games. “When LSU broke the game open in the first

Ban 5

half with a 45 yard interception return for a touchdown. The Tiger’s Jacob Phillips donned a towel as if it was the Miami chain on the sideline”(Joseph). Students are missing a chance to be part of a celebration that exerts a huge influence to the world. There is a strong possibility that a celebration like this may never be created again. If someone resides in Miami, this is something they should check out as soon as possible because we never know how long this celebration is going to go for. Some might argue that college football games is just as bad as partying because of tailgates. Tailgates are a party that many football fans attend before any football games starts. One of the biggest stereotype of tailgating is that students drink so much alcohol that they don’t go to the football games. However, there are many ways to have fun in tailgates aside from drinking. For example, one can play giant yard game. “There’s just something about king-sizing classic family that makes them more way more fun to play. Whether you stack up giant Jenga, take a shake at oversized Yahtzee, set up colossal Connect Four or play to be super-sized checkers champ, you can bet every other tailgate will want to join in on the big-time fun” (Seis). People don’t realize that tailgating is more than drinking and eating grilled food. As long as one loves trying new things, he or she can still have fun through recreational activities. To sum it up, I believe sporting events should be an alternative to partying for students because they might have a chance to see some important moments and celebrations in college sports history. Partying can be fun, but there is a low chance that students will make a lot of memories from it. It never hurts to check out different activities on campus because one might make more memories at sporting events than parties. As long as people are willing to learn and

Ban 6

be more open minded, there is a possibility that many people can find a sport that meets their interests.
