English Hoilday Essay Billy Elliot...

Description

Stories often invite audiences to appreciate the power of human interactions and relationships to offer new insights into the world and oneself. How does your text affirm or challenge the above statement? In your response, make detailed reference to the text.

An individual's journey is moulded through the meaningful relationships created throughout their life events which are formed from human interactions. A person's personality is established through an individual's self of identity formed from the human interactions which is foreseen in the captivating award winning 2000 film “Billy Elliot”. It explores how paradoxical experiences often affect others opinions to see the world differently, to challenge assumptions and to ignite new ideas. Pursuing one's dream and Grieving loss supports the concept of how stories often invite audiences to appreciate the power of human interactions and relationships to offer new insights into the world and oneself. Pursuing dreams evokes an individual to follow their dreams and have a sense of hope and freedom outside society's expectations. Relationships and human interactions have an influential impact on an individual, as they can change the mindset of an individual wanting to pursue their dream which is showcased in Billy Elliot. Near the start of the movie Miss Wilkerson interacts with Billy and comments that he thought he had fun. This shows through dialogue and diegetic sounds that Miss Wilkerson is focused on what is best for billy and the wellbeing of her students she is not held back by societal normalities unlike Billy who has to face the fear of his father’s disapproval as we as the communities judgement for showing feminine qualities which was ridiculed and looked down on in the 1800s. This shows the power of human interaction as it helps Billy cope with stress and major decisions of pursuing ballet and provides new insights into the world and oneself. Jackie is considered an obstacle for Billy to overcome adversity and to pursue his dreams. Through the use of dialogue Jackie yells in an aggressive tone “You! Out! Now!” with the use of dramatic pauses and staccato (rapid beats). Jackie looks furious as he discovers that Billy does ballet. This scene is distinct as Jackie is a part of the lower class where they have little education and masculinity is of importance. Jackie feels Billy is betraying their class and family by participating in an activity of such high class which is “made for girls” and fears that Billy's masculinity will portray Jackie's parenting to other lower class families. This shows that Jackie and Billy have a negative relationship and human interaction as Jackie can not comprehend that Billy's dream is to do ballet. This affects Billy mentally as he feels obliged to quit ballet and become a miner like him and his brother. This shows the power of human interaction as Miss Wilkerson supported Billy and gave him freedom and non judgemental areas to pursue his dream which gave Billy a positive mindset. But when Jackie came in and shouted “You! Out! Now!” turned Billy upside down and gave him a negative mindset, and that glimpse of hope was crushed between his fathers hands. This shows the readers that the people who are in your life can either push you up and make you a better person or drag you down, which proves how important relationships and human interactions are offering new insights into the world and oneself in pursuing dreams.

Grief is a collective experience shared among others, each shown or expressed differently through human interactions and relationships. Through the use of diegetic sound, Jackie walks in on Billy dancing and Michael wearing a toto the sound creates a sense of suspense as the audience thinks that Jackie will be on board with the hopeful music. Billy tries to show his dad his skills in the area of ballet. Jackie is in disbelief to start and tells Billy to go home. The loss of his wife and now finding out that Billy dances has increased Jackie's anger. By Billy hiding from his dad in the first place shows that Billy and his dad did not share the same views on ballet, this weakened the relationship between him and his dad as they were both going through tough times of losing their wife/mother and needed someone to support them. This shows that without human interaction leading you in the right direction grief will overtake and bring the negativity out of an individual and the loss of new insight provided. In this scene Billy arrives at the community centre to say goodbye to Mrs Wilkinson. Throughout the scene it is evident that the director chose to use an over the shoulder shot to direct the conversation. This shot shows perspective in relation to Billy and Mrs Wilkinson offering the viewer a new POV to make the scene more dynamic and provide a new perspective of the scene. This shot also exposes the level of emotion Mrs Wilkinson and Billy have as this camera angle indicates a connection of montherly intimacy. However, when the two break this conversation it signifies closure and disconnect as Billy has grieves another mother figure when he moves away. This shows that Billy looked up to Miss Wilkerson as a motherly figure, this was shown through the human interactions and the relationship that was formed between them. This shows the reader that in time of grief, human interactions and relationships are important as they are there to support one another and guide them into the right path with the use of new insight into the world. Through the universal themes of pursuing dreams and grief and loss, Steven Daldry has personally provoked his text which has challenged or affirmed the viewpoint of the audience through how “Stories often invite audiences to appreciate the power of human interactions and relationships to offer new insights into the world and oneself.” It compels the importance of human interaction and relationships and how they can convey new insights into the world which can change how an individual will think and undertake events either negative or positive in their life....
