PURPOSE OF ENS 330 Fitness and health are essential lifelong ingredients to living well … from youth through old age. This course introduces students to research-based, scientific information about exercise, physical activity, and nutrition, while offering practical and adaptable plans that can be used throughout one’s life to build and/or maintain health and fitness.

COURSE DESCRIPTION AND OVERVIEW 



Description from the Official Course Catalog: Role of physical activity and exercise behavior in health and wellness. Personal applications plus gender and cultural implications of physical activity from childhood through adulthood o Important note: Dr. Verity has taught this course over the past several years and is an expert in the exercise & fitness field; however, minor changes in the Syllabus may be needed at his discretion that will not adversely affect any student. The course uses a number of technologies. There can/may be a few glitches along the way, but keep in mind an online course allows you the convenience of doing coursework from your home or other preferred location, saving you the trouble of commuting, and/or finding parking, and more! Student Learning Outcomes for this course are: o Describe the role and benefits of physical activity/exercise in reducing chronic disease onset and improving overall wellness throughout the lifespan o Summarize the recommended components of exercise and/or physical activity that are related to improved health and wellness across the lifeway

Determine the recommended nutritional components and principles for health and wellness across all ages Discuss the basic exercise prescriptions for energy and muscular fitness along with methods to monitor fitness Summarize the role of exercise/physical activity in assisting in managing various conditions, including: obesity; heart disease; diabetes; cancer; depression

ENROLLMENT INFORMATION  PREREQUISITE [STRONGLY RECOMMENDED TO BE COMPLETED]: o Completion of the General Education requirement in Foundations of Learning II.B., Social and Behavioral Sciences

COURSE STRUCTURE AND CONDUCT  

This course is entirely online. As indicated below in the ‘Course Schedule’ …We will work on one chapter in the book per week. You may work at your own pace within a given chapter and week. Each week, you will be expected to complete and submit your activity (activities). There will be no ‘timeline’ for submitting your assigned activities, or extra credit

activities during the semester; however, 7 MAY 2021 @ 12:00 NOON will be the deadline for submission of all assigned OR extra credit activities.

COURSE ASSESSMENT – WHAT DETERMINES YOUR GRADE? Course grades will be assessed and derived by including, but not limited to:  ACTIVITIES: Individual activities available to be completed throughout the semester must be submitted via Blackboard [Bb], as listed in the ENS 330 syllabus o Students are expected to complete the various activities presented throughout the semester, as grading will be based upon satisfactory completion of available activities. o These activities are made available to ‘engage’ the student with active learning on topics being presented throughout the semester o Activities are intended to provide you with opportunities to gain a deeper understanding of course outcomes, topics and textbook readings. Each activity is worth 10 points. o There will be EXTRA CREDIT activities available throughout the semester for you to complete – these EXTRA CREDIT activities are worth 10 points each.  NOTE: 7 MAY 2021 @ 12:00 NOON will be the deadline for submission of all assigned OR extra credit activities 

QUIZZES: Quizzes must be completed online and will be made available for an extended period of time for all students to take these low stakes quizzes throughout the semester. Each quiz is worth 20 points.





EXAMS: Exams will be given approximately every 4 weeks throughout the semester, according to the syllabus. Once you begin the exam, you will need to finish within the allotted timeframe for the exam. Students will have ample opportunity to complete each exam, as the ‘window’ to complete the exam will be very generous. Each exam is worth 100 points. YOUR Grading: o Grading will follow University established protocol for grade establishment o It is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to track your own grades OR Please keep track of your own grades – they are posted in Blackboard. It is very important to track your grade and progress, so you know your status and can check for accuracy. o Quiz and Exam scores are posted in Blackboard immediately; while Activity Assignments require one week, or a longer time period for grading

THIS COURSE WILL BE GRADED ACCORDING TO FOLLOWING CRITERIA: o ACTIVITIES – 10 activities across the semester @ 10 points each = 100 pts[17 %] o QUIZZES – 5 quizzes will be available this semester @ 20 points each = 100 pts [16 %] o EXAMS – 4 exams will be presented this semester @ 100 points each = 400 pts [67 %]  TOTAL POINTS %]

ASSIGNED ACTIVITIES, QUIZZES, AND EXAMS ASSIGNED ACTIVITIES—[NAMED AND C OLOR C ODED IN EACH WEEK AS PURPLE IN BLACKBOARD]: O

10 INDIVIDUAL ACTIVITIES @ 10 POINTS EACH = 100 POINTS o You will work individually on each assigned activity. Note that each activity is fairly short in time to complete; however, there are a few activities that will require a more thoughtful response to the question(s) being presented. Each activity will be open and you are encouraged to complete each activity with the chapter being covered each week. Each activity will require that you complete no more than a one-page document and upload the document into Blackboard [Bb] – instructions will be provided in Bb for each activity on student expectations. o There are FIVE (n=5) “Extra Credit” Activities for this class 10 pts ea = totaling 50 points

Quizzes will be based on textbook, lecture presentation [PowerPoints], assigned activities, and online course materials. Each quiz is open notes and timed. 5 Online quizzes @ 20 points each = 100 points

4 EXAMS APPROXIMATELY EVERY 4 WEEKS -- @ 100 POINTS EACH = 400 POINTS EACH EXAM WILL BE MADE AVAILABLE FOR FOUR WEEKDAYS EACH WEEK THAT AN EXAM IS GIVEN. EXAMS WILL BE MADE AVAILABLE AT 12 NOON ON MONDAY AND WILL CLOSE AT 12 NOON ON THURSDAY o You'll respond to a number of questions (e.g., multiple choice; True/False; Fill-in-the-blank) dealing with the assigned textbook readings, online course materials, assigned activities, and quizzes. o Based on textbook materials, course presentation and PowerPoints, and online course materials. Open notes, one try, timed (60 minutes).
