Description

1. Enumerate and discuss the salient provisions of the Treaty of Paris. Name 3 Things that you have learned and understood about the lesson 

The Spaniards sold the Philippines to the Americans for $20million US dollars in the Treaty of Paris, 1898. That tells us that Spain doesn’t care less for the islands. Talk about colonizing the Phils for the christian “god”. And the U.S. also treated the whole thing as a “sale”. When in truth and in fact, the Filipino army already beat the Spaniards in a war 1896–1898. The American ace is their navy. Commanded by an “imperialist” - Admiral Dewey - it destroyed the Spanish fleet and sat in Manila Bay to await army reinforcements. Also, the Americans convinced the Filipinos that they will give independence to the Filipinos which were a mockery because the Americans would not let the Filipino army enter Manila. After the Spaniards sold the Philippines, the FilipinoAmerican war, lasting for 4 years erupted. The American government, in its own costs, assured Spain that all Spanish soldiers taken as prisoners of war will be freed and sent back to their country. It also provided that Spain would vacate the ceded territories in accordance with the Protocol of Peace signed on 12 August 1898, after the treaty’s ratification. The same article also confirmed that properties belonging to the naval forces of Spain in the ceded territories shall remain property of Spain. The Treaty of Paris officially ended the Spanish-American War. The once-proud Spanish empire was virtually dissolved as the United States took over much of Spain’s overseas holdings. Puerto Rico and Guam were ceded to the United States, but it also started a new war between Philippines and the United States when an American soldier shot a Filipino and died and it lasted for 4 years.

I don’t like the idea that all the Spanish prisoners will be freed after the agreement, for me it is not fair since there are a lot Filipinos suffered a great loss because of their colonization they need to be imprisoned or just pay for what they did but since the United States will, upon the signature of the present treaty, send back to Spain, at its own cost, the Spanish soldiers taken as prisoners of war on the capture of Manila by the American forces. The arms of the soldiers in question shall be restored to them. I disagree with the treaty of Paris, The American and Spanish government reckoned the Treaty of Paris as an instrument of Peace, but the Filipinos resented its conclusion and ratification for they were not consulted and considered in its making. Further, the provisions of the treaty were not for the benefit of the Filipinos but for the imperialists, instead. With the signing and ratification of the Treaty of Paris, the bitter relations between the Americans and the Filipinos turned bitterer and eventually lead to another episode that was known as Filipino-American War.

2. What is/are the relevance of the Political Caricatures of the American Era in understanding the grand narrative of Philippine History? Name 3 Things that you have learned and understood about the lesson   

Political cartoons serve as primers for engaging in the prevailing opinions of that time. One positive effect of political cartoon is that it becomes the representation of the current conditions of our country Future generations will be able to have a glimpse of the past Philippine society through these cartoons. Also, it also serves as a study and reference tool for further generations. Through the use of political cartoons, people get to visualize politics and appreciate the representations which are within their worldview.

It can be manipulated and misinterpreted if doesn’t have a text or an explanation since it need to be analyze to understand what the caricature all about but when you doesn’t really understand the point of the caricature you will be confused and you can spread it to others and it will spread fake news. I agree with the use of caricature since it can easily help to imagine what does the text or article is all about for the people who don’t want to read a long articles and it is easy to visualize what happened....
