Professor Simmons Art History 1 Compare and Contrast Essay Through human life there has been some many different styles ,techniques, and meaning of art. The most impressive art is Egyptian art because of it carving techniques to make sculpture and its style breaks though the time periods . The time period of the Old Kingdom, the Middle Kingdom, the New Kingdom ,and transitional period. The time periods this essay will focus on is the Old Kingdom and the New Kingdom art work. The two pieces of art this essay will focus on is from The Old Kingdom and The New Kingdom time period. The King Menkaure (Mycerinus) and queen dates back to 2490–2472 B.C.E which is the Old Kingdom time period. This artwork is a sculpture of the pharaoh of egypt and his wife the queen of egypt it was found in the Menkaura's Valley Temple. The second piece of art is from The New Kingdom time period.The House Altar depicting Akhenaten, Nefertiti and Three of their Daughters date back to 1350 B.C.E. This artwork is on a small stone plaque and on the stone is a craving of the pharaoh Akhematen , his queen Nefertiti , and this three daughters, and the sun god. This essay will compare and contrast the formal qualities of the two artworks.The formal qualities that will be in both artworks are style and material. The King Menkaure (Mycerinus) and Queen and House Altar depicting Akhenaten, Nefertiti and Three of their Daughters are similar in style.These artwork are not typical in the regular standards of egyptian art.The standard of eygptian art is showing the pharaoh as powerful and the only one who rules egypt. The typical sculpture of a pharaoh and queen is the pharaoh is taller than the queen, has broad shoulders ,and always strides with the left foot forward.The

Orozco 2 queen is shorter than the pharaoh , hands at her side, and feet together. The styles of both artworks are similar in showing unity, love, and support through art. The King Menkaure (Mycerinus) and queen is a sculpture used to ensure the rebirth of the king in the afterlife. The sculpture was found in the

king temple and no one was meant to see it because of it

incompletion. The style of the King Menkaure (Mycerinus) and queen is showing unity and love through the sculpture.Unity is shown by the pharaoh and his queen are the same height.Also, the king and queen both stride with their left foot .Only kings stride with their left foot. Another style shown is love and support by the queen embracing the king. These characteristics from the sculpture shown they rule together and share power. The second artwork is Queen and House Altar depicting Akhenaten, Nefertiti and Three of their Daughters has similar style as the King Menkaure (Mycerinus) and queen by showing unity,love,and support through art. The Queen and House Altar depicting Akhenaten, Nefertiti and Three of their Daughters is a big moment in eygptian art because the pharaoh has changed the religion and change the god Aten in egypt. The only representation of the new god on earth is him and his wife. The small stone plaque was used as an alter in a person home. The meaning of this plaque was to break the typical eygtian art and to disguise the new religion from egypt past. The style unity, love , and support is being shown through the depicting of the pharaoh , queen, daughter , and the sun god. Unity is being shown by the sun god giving the pharaoh and queen life .The pharaoh and queen are at equal level showing equality. Also, the pharaoh taking care of his daughters. Love and support is shown as the pharaoh and queen support their children. These two art work are similar by their different style of typical Egyptian art. The King Menkaure (Mycerinus) and Queen and House Altar depicting Akhenaten, Nefertiti and Three of their Daughters are different from the type of material they are made from.

Orozco 3 The king Menkaure (Mycerinus) and Queen sculpture is made out of greywacke. The greywacke stone made the sculpture color black and the texture of the sculpture is smooth. This stone is a material used for sculpture because it can make define edges ,smooth surface, and detail in the body. This material is used in past Egyptian sculpture . The artist used this material to symbolize traditional Egyptian art and created a new image of royals that traditional Egyptian art doesn’t have.Queen and House Altar depicting Akhenaten, Nefertiti and Three of their Daughters is different from the The King Menkaure (Mycerinus) and Queen because of the material they are made from. Queen and House Altar depicting Akhenaten, Nefertiti and Three of their Daughters is made out of limestone. The reason of this material was used because it is meant for a home . Also, to used it soft surface to make small details. The two art work are different because of the material they are made from. This essay is a compare and contrast on two Egyptians art the King Menkaure (Mycerinus) and Queen and House Altar depicting Akhenaten, Nefertiti and Three of their Daughters.
