Antonio Guterres once said, “The fact that societies are becoming increasingly multiethnic, multicultural, and multi-religious is good. Diversity is a strength, not a weakness.” Multiculturalism is one of the great features in Canada that makes Canadaians feel grateful about. Multiculturalism works through the establishment of good ties among diverse cultural members, equal rights and freedoms for all citizens of Canada and openly practising various traditions and religions. Firstly, Canada is a multicultural country and those here people live in good relationships with each other. The population of Canada is based on people with various ethnicities, so it is tough to discover people with the same nationality, race or religion. There are simply 32.5% Canadians, the other 67.5% are humans with distinctive nationalities (Census in Brief: Ethnic and cultural origins of Canadians: Portrait of a rich heritage, 2017). Moreover, records show that many interracial friendships, relationships and marriges occur within the society. “Interracial marriages in Canada are more common than ever and, potentially, on the rise,” stated Natasha Sharma, a Canadian relationship expert. Only approximately 15% of Canadian population would not have a relationship with someone outside of their race, culture or religion (15% of Canadians would never marry outside their race: Ipsos poll, Arti Patel). Additionally, loyal international relationships make a great impact on humans and their behaviour. It decreases violence and racism within the society. “All of my friends are with distinct cultural backgrounds. In my school, most of my classmates were multiracial and I used to be nearly the only one white person there, but it was never a problem for me.” stated Sergio Attardo, a resident of Canada. Furthermore, kids with interracial friendships are more socially skilled than kids with no interracial friendships. Loyal multicultural relationships among people proves that multiculturalism works and makes an excellent effect on humans' personalities, attitudes and behaviors in the Canadian

Yekaterina Khryachsheva 3 society. Secondly, all Canadians, no matter what their ethnicity or nationality, have the same rights and freedoms. Equal rights are the main fundamental of the Canadian charter of human rights and freedoms. Equality states that Canadians, irrespective of personal characteristics such as race, ethnic or national origin, religion, colour, etc., must be treated with the same admiration and dignity. As a result, everybody should be handled the same way underneath the law. The Canadian government protects every culture equally. Since, this is a law to respect each other, all Canadians must follow them in order of not having further issues. This makes people accept each other and each other’s cultures and live in peace all together. Moreover, diverse communities appreciate the abundance and uniqueness that different cultures bring to society. All cultures value and respect one another in an equal way. Thirdly, residents of Canada are allowed to follow their religion and culture. Newcomers are not forced to accept and follow one certain culture or religion. It is a Canadian fundamental freedom. When people migrate, they are permitted to keep and practise their own religion, which they practised back home. In addition, unlike other nations, citizens in Canada are permitted to express their culture and religion through wearing traditional or religious clothes, celebrating national holidays, etc. For example, in Canada, Muslim women are allowed to wear hijabs as long as they want to, but if a Muslim woman wears a hijab in Europe for example, people will stare at her and perhaps violate her religion. Moreover, all year long many religious activities, festivals and ceremonies take place, including the Toronto Jewish Film Festival, Toronto Flower Festival (Hanamatsuri), Sick Festivals, Chinese New Year and many others. Additionally, there are greater than 18 religions in Canada. Thus, a lot of churches, mosques, mandirs and other places, where religions can be freely practised. In conclusion, multiculturalism is successful for everybody in Canada via strong relationships with various representatives of diverse cultures, equal rights and freedoms, and the ability to openly follow independent customs and beliefs. Canadians live in peace within the multicultural society, communicate with one another in everyday life and respect each other’s cultures, rights and religions. It is a good thing to live in a multicultural community, since it is an ability to compliment your uniqueness, to make friends with special features, and to discover the traditions and religions of other cultures.
