Description

Google is busy working in deepest New Mexico. The aim? To find a way to offer a high-speed internet. In order to do so, the company based in Mountain View is designing several prototypes of transceivers placed on solar-powered drones as the Guardian reports. This project, which was still secret before its disclosure by the British newspaper is codenamed “SkyBender”. To store its drones, Google has temporarily moved into a hangar at the Gateway to Space terminal, built by Virgin Galactic for spatial tourism. The technology giant is said to have rented the space port situated near the town of Truth or Consequences for a fee of 3,000$. The company would also pay Virgin Galactic a thousand dollars a day to use the terminal. SkyBender uses drones to experiment millimeter wave radio transmissions, one of the technologies that could lead to 5G internet. “High frequency millimeter waves could theoretically deliver gigabytes of data per second wrote the Guardian. The only problem is that the transmissions of millimeter waves have a shorter reach than mobile phone signals. A transmission at 28GHz, the frequency tested by Google at the moment, would fade away at one tenth of the distance of a 4G signal. SkyBender is being tested with Centaur, a semi-autonomous plane, half drone, half plane, and also with solar-powered drones build by Google Titan. This division is the result of Google buying the start-up Titan Aerospace in 2014, right under the nose of Facebook. Titan is specialized in the conception of solar-powered drones capable of keeping themselves in the air for 5 years at an eight of 20 kilometers. At the time of the acquisition, a spokesperson for Google already said that “atmospheric satellites could help to provide internet access to millions of people”....
