The Legalization of Marijuana in Canada

Marijuana is currently a hot topic of debate throughout Canada and has been for the past few years. People are arguing on whether to legalize it in the whole country or not. Despite almost a century of prohibition, with 43% of Canadians claiming to have used at some point in their life, marijuana is the most widely used illicit substance in Canada. According to the data from the 2012 Canadian Community Health Survey-Mental Health (CCHS-MH), while more than 14% of Canadian (aged 15 and older) living in Nova Scotia and British Columbia reported that they have inhaled at least once in the past year, this figure was almost 10% in the Prince Edward Island and Saskatchewan. Canadian youth has the highest rate of marijuana use among developed countries, with almost a quarter of the population aged 15 to 24 years reporting past-year use. Males are also more likely to have reported past-year use than their female’s counterparts in all age groups.

(Hajizadeh, Mohammad). Marijuana has been regarded as a harmful plant that can endanger lives and is thought to be nothing more than an extra problem to be dealt with in today’s society. However, based on its medical benefits and its economic value, cannabis has proven to outweigh its positives with numerous other negatives.

Trudeau, Canada’s Prime minister just approved the marijuana law to be legalized in the country and has certain policies and rules about cannabis, but also people can now buy it openly in a surprising number of ways and places. The system that the federal government set up to give people access to medical marijuana is broken. Marijuana is actually medically beneficial, bringing relief to many conditions. But what is Marijuana? Marijuana refers to the dried leaves, flowers, stems, and seeds from the Cannabis sativa or Cannabis Indica plant. The plant contains the mind-altering chemical THC and other similar compounds(Hill KP).Although there are therapeutic benefits of marijuana use in neuropathic pain, inflammatory bowel diseases, managing symptoms of chemotherapy and treatment-resistant epilepsy in children. According to the National Institutes of Health, people have used marijuana, or cannabis, to treat their ailments for at least 3,000 years. Over the years many has conducted research on marijuana and its benefits to humans. Last years a large review from the National Academics of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine assessed more than 10,000 scientific studies on the medical benefits and adverse effects of marijuana (David Railton).Medical Cannabis is used to treat Chronic pain, depressions PTSD and anxiety. Cancer being one of the uncurable diseases, it lessens the effects of chemotherapy like nausea and vomiting. Some studies also show that can slow the growth of cancer cells or even kill cancer but is not effective or reliable completely. There are many benefits of medical marijuana, its use is associated with adverse health effect but it also has worst

negative effects.

The regular usage of marijuana is associated with some health risk such as: problems with healthy brain development among young people, the strong urge to use of other illicit drugs, depression or anxiety injury and risk of death from motor vehicle collisions, symptoms of chronic bronchitis, schizophrenia and addiction problem. Daily use of marijuana can worsen the symptoms of people with bipolar disorder and among other people who have mental health problems. Moderate evidence suggests that regular marijuana users are more likely to experience suicidal thoughts, and there is a small increased risk of depression among marijuana users (David Railton). Based on causal effects on marijuana use disorders, schizophrenia, Testicular cancer, Respiratory diseases, lung cancer and road traffic injuries, Imtiaz and colleagues showed that marijuana use caused 287 deaths and 66346 disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) in 2012. While marijuana-related mortality was estimated to occur due to the causal effects of marijuana use on motor-vehicle accidents and lung cancer, the number of morbidity cases attributable to marijuana use was by far the highest in motor-vehicle accidents and use disorders domains in Canada(Hajizadeh,Mohammad).Because this Law is implemented already it means freedom for everyone to buy any amount of cannabis they want, so people are now buying legally but still selling it illegally to other people especially to minors to make money because minor aged 18 below are not allowed to purchase any kind o legalized drug not only cannabis. To buy Cannabis one needs a valid government I.D and those people that buy cannabis, their names are registered and entered in the database so the participating shops and the government agency that handles this special cannabis law section has record on whoever bought the product, for their research and other policy related purposes. People misuse Cannabis instead of using it as a medicine

people are getting high on it and because of this many people are dying either of overdose or acquiring deadly diseases that targets the nervous system of a person. Cannabis law is implemented in Canada but along it there are also several procedures, precautions and warning not properly introduced to people.

In conclusion, even though Cannabis is medically important it still has many negative effects on people. Many people are misusing it and are getting diseases that can endanger their lives and bring misery upon the lives of their loved ones. Precautions on Cannabis should be introduced to people properly, only publishing articles, policies and warning on the internet won’t help. There should be flyers or brochures being given to people and most importantly in schools, there should be discussion about the negatives and positives of cannabis and how it affects one’s health if not used properly and in a proper age as young children are mostly affected. Though Cannabis has positive effects on people that need it medically it can still damage one’s health in many ways.
