Description

English essay The novel Narnia was written by C.S. Lewis in 1949 and is about four siblings, who walk through this mysterious wardrobe, which is a passage to the magic world Narnia. The four siblings seem to be normal young kids because they are arguing with each other and play hide-and-seek. However, once they are in Narnia they meet difficult challenges. They have to fight against the evil white witch who has taken over Narnia. They are raising an army with the leader Aslan to fight against the White Witch. The theme of the novel is good vs evil. The White Witch does not have any good shades and Aslan does not have any evil shades. The four siblings are somewhere in the middle. They do not have any evil shades but they are still making some mistakes compared to Aslan who is described as being without any flaws. In this essay I will first characterize some of the main characters. Secondly I will write about the symbols in the novel. Thirdly I will write about the contrast between good and evil and look for a connection to the second World War. Finally, I will conclude based on my analysis and interpretation. Lucy is specifically described as a curious girl in the passage where she stays behind in a room after her siblings have left it. Shortly after, she walks through the wardrobe because she wants to know what is inside it. Even though she is the youngest she is very sensible e.g. when she suggests they all go to bed at the same time, while Susan and Edmund are discussing about bedtime. Edmund is the youngest boy and is described as almost always angry with his siblings. E.g. when Susan tells him to go to bed, he refuses and tells her not to act like their mother. On the other hand he supports his brother Peter in the battle against the White Witch where he bravely participates in the battle. Susan is the eldest sister. She often tries to behave as the mother of her siblings. She takes responsibility which you can see from the following quotation, “it’s time you were in bed”. She is also brave which you traditionally consider as a boy’s quality. Peter is the eldest of the siblings. He is specifically described as a very brave boy which can be seen from the fact that he leads the battle against the White Witch. The White Witch enchants Edmund who betrays his siblings and Narnia. Aslan sacrifices himself to save Edmund from the White Witch. The White Witch kills Aslan on the stone table but Aslan is

resurrected. This part could symbolize when Jesus was betrayed by Judas and sacrificed himself for his people. A month later Jesus is resurrected. The fight between good and bad and sacrificing yourself are referring to Christianity. During a battle the Author C.S. Lewis was hurt. He had a depression partly because he suffered from homesickness. I think that some of the war-experiences he had are used as background for the novel Narnia. During the second Wold War the Germans bombed and attacked Britain. The Germans were the evil part in the war while the Britons were the good part. This war is background for the story of Narnia. In the beginning of the story the siblings were evacuated from London because of the air raids. Even though they were evacuated to a safe place in the country they are entering another world where there is a battle. In this battle they are responsible for the outcome. In the real war they were just kids who were evacuated in order to be protected. In the battle in Narnia they are the “grown ups” where they are taking responsibility and fighting. The wardrobe is the passage to Narnia. The tangible meaning of it is that their clothes have changed to hunting array. Figuratively speaking they are turning to “adults” who take responsibility and take part in the battle. To sum up, the novel is about the fight between good and evil. Good and evil is a part of Christianity. Aslan is a figure like Jesus. After the author has taken part in the first World War he turns to Christianity. This has influenced the story....
