ETHICS ASSIGNMENT #6 BA 1501: HOW BUSINESS WORKS By: Chinamerem G. Elekwachi March 14th, 2021

ETHICS ASSIGNMENT #06

Let’s be honest. Q: Are UCSF and other companies justified in outsourcing technology jobs to India? Do they have any obligation to find other jobs or provide training for displaced workers? Should organizations ask employees who are being laid off to train their replacements?

Large companies send their employees to foreign countries to handle business relations, outside of its home country. For example: Tech giants such as Amazon, Facebook, Apple & Google and several other MNC’s go outsourcing in several Asian countries. India, Sir Lanka Bangladesh, Malaysia, China etc. (Grensing-Pophal, L. 2018,) since labor costs in those countries is extremely cheap. After the 2008 recession, several North American countries stopped hiring full-time workers within their countries; instead, they started hiring freelancers for the benefit of their companies.

Personally, in my opinion, the company cannot force them to train their respective replacements. The laid off workers might feel resentful towards the newly hired employees, and not provide them with the best, adequate training he/she should get. Due their “trainer” did not bother to train them well, since they are being replaced. (Amadeo, K. 2021,). Although, this does bring down labor costs on having to hire trainers to properly teach the new hires how the job works. It does not make it ethical, and it can bring down the overall well-being of the workers in general. For example, drama between the new workers and the old ones and people not being able to working efficiently because of this underlying issue.

When it comes to large companies outsourcing to other countries, I find this to be a “double edgedsword:” one side can help the economy grow in developing countries, with adding more employment opportunity. Although, at the same time these workers are getting on average less than 10sud per day for the hard labor they do. (Green, A. 2016,) This is not enough for anyone to put food on the table and provide for families. On the other hand, a full-time worker in the Western-Hemisphere lost their source of employment. A good example of this is when General Motors factories across the state of Michigan were being shut-down at a rapid pace. Thousands of employees lost their jobs due to outsourcing.

(Snyder, M.,

Huston, W., & Luke, A. 2015,)

When it comes to outsourcing, I think there needs to be a balance between workers within the home country of the company and the workers outside the country. As some jobs are being outsourced to different countries, new jobs could be created. (Green, A. 2016,) this ensures that the employees within the Western-hemisphere can at least not be unemployed for a long period of time. The workers within

Asian countries: such as India should be paid a living wage. If the company can afford to do so, I do not see a reason why anyone should be living under 10usd per day.
