Ethical issues and dilemmas are something that is going to come up in the field of criminal justice. It is essential to understand the difference between the two. An ethical issue is easier to understand and solve. This is when you can refer to the Code of Ethics to solve the problem that is at hand. An example of an ethical issue would be if a counselor were asked by their hairstylist to be their client (Bartlett, 2016). This is a simple solution because it would be unethical to have an outside relationship concerning the Code of Ethics. Ethical issues typically have simple solutions because they are straightforward. Ethical dilemmas are more complex than ethical issues. This is when two or more ethical principles are conflicting with one another (Bartlett, 2016). They typically are not easy to resolve and must be looked at more carefully than an ethical issue. The situation above could quickly become an ethical dilemma if the people involved live in a small town and have no other options. If that counselor were the only one available, it would raise an ethical dilemma when seeing if they could take them on as a client (Bartlett, 2016). It would be a hard choice to make since there are no other options for this person when looking for a counselor. Ethical situations such as the one described can arise in any case and must be handled correctly to avoid further issues. If the "right" answer is not clear, ethical issues and dilemmas may become harder to solve.
