BSA 1-11 Pornography II. Discuss the possible implication (positive or negative) of the patronage of pornography to the development of one’s character. Through the introduction of digital age, it became easier for people to transfer and gain access to information all throughout the globe. And regarding the aspect of pornography, it became more available compared to how it was before when pornography specifically here in the Philippines is accessed only through magazines, tabloids, pocket books and even through videos such as Betamax, VHS, and compact discs. But now, Pornography appears to be everywhere, giving the illusion that all pornography is legal, apart from sexual abuse of children, violent torture or sex with animals, that even cinemas are screening it and making it open to the public. When discussing the topic of Pornography, what first comes into mind are the negative implications of it primarily focusing on sexual abuse such as rape that is and evident and a timely issue in the Philippines where people and gender of all ages are being victimized. Rape can be categorized in different ways. There is marital rape, gang rape where there are two or more than perpetrator who rapes a single victim, and theft rape where victims are being kidnapped and raped later on leading to prostitution. But among these types of rape, one that I would say is the most heinous is Rape of children. Some commit this even to their own children without even thinking what will bring this to child’s physical and mental health. Which result in serious and long-term psychological trauma. This is where exploitation of children, prostitution, abuse happens. A unicef report on December 2012 stated that the Philippines has become a top global source of child pornography with around 80% of Filipino kids at risk of online sexual abuse . Child pornography is a billion-dollar industry, and Filipino children are the ones being traded and exploited online. Children who are made to perform sex acts in front of a web camera will never get their childhood back. Another negative factor of pornography is porn addiction where it triggers the pumping out of dopamine, which sets off a cascade of chemicals to mentally connect what a person sees to what they are doing to the pleasure they feel, making it easier and easier to return to porn. It is

similar to drugs and other addictive substances like tobacco that have very similar effects on the brain. When porn usage is frequent, the dopamine level required to feel excitement is so heightened that the person can no longer feel pleasure at only things that used to make him happy. It later on affects a person’s behavior, longing for the pleasure they feel when watching porn. Porn on the social aspect may affect it badly as well encouraging social isolation. Regular use of porn can lead to feeling less aroused by a real-life partner. Engaging through short term relationships and even turning away from a close human relationship and turning toward the source of the stimulation on the screen or page through the internet. Spending a lot of time using porn can be isolating as the user turns more and more to the porn and away from actual people. They now have secrets from the people in their lives, making it impossible to be truly honest. it’s not a far stretch to become overly self-involved and insensitive to others When a person is constantly bombarded with images of explicit and anonymous sex aimed at gratifying the user without any consideration of the other person’s feelings. Basic human respect and women dignity are being disregarded when watching porn. People who watch this tend to see women as sexual objects primarily for pleasure. These are some ways that porn kills empathy and desensitizes the user to women’s humanity. Porn can make negative changes in a person’s mood. Society looks at porn users as deviants or perverts he spends an enormous amount of energy keeping it secret, fantasizing about it when he’s not using it, and simultaneously be ashamed of his need for and lack of control over it. But what people really don’t know is that pornography may also be used in a good way as well. It was reported that consumers through porn are being less repressed about sex giving them the idea on how to perform when that moment with their partner comes. It is also making people more open-minded about sex. It provides educational insights in a way that married couples tend to get more creative in following the positions in certain pornographic videos making their sexual intercourse more fun and intimate making consumers more attentive to a partner’s sexual desires helping them to talk to their partners about sex. It helps consumers find an identity or community through people’s fetish and kinks. Because exploring your sexuality is how you find out what you like. According to a popular study in the Archives of Sexual Behavior found that watching pornography offers a safe place to express sexual, deviant desires Watching a moderate amount of porn may decrease aggressive tendencies which may decrease the likelihood of

someone committing a sex crime. Pornographic content is also used for medical purposes because it increases libido. There are instances where male patients are set in a private space in front of the television and produce semen for medical purposes like testing of the semen or for surrogate parents and test tube babies for semen collection or Sperm ejaculation where the sperm sample is collected in order to conduct eggs fertilization. Though pornography may contribute positive and negative implications, considering the culture here in the Philippines, I personally see the negative implications of it above the positive side. Because the use of pornographic content especially the abuse of it from what I see in the Philippine society leads to sexual abuse and crimes making children and women prone to rape.
