The Lees are a Chinese American family who live in a small Ohio town. James Lee is a history professor, and Marilyn is a homemaker. They have three children: Nath, Lydia, and Hannah. The story opens by telling readers that Lydia is dead, but that her family doesn’t know that yet. Eventually Lydia is found at the bottom of the community lake. After her death, her family realizes that they didn’t really know Lydia after all. And then, this book gradually unfolds the tale. James is a Chinese whose parents stole into American. He is different from others and he hates that. He hates other people talk about his family and looked at him strangely. He is so self-abased and always doubt himself. So he was seeking to be like everyone else in the society. However, Marilyn is a white girl who was seeking to be different, she didn’t want to live like her mother. She wants to be a doctor, not a housewife. Marilyn and James met when he was her professor in college. They falling love because of this kind of mutual compensation. But in fact, Marilyn became pregnant and gave up her dream to be a doctor to marry James. she gradually lives like her mother. When Marilyn’s mother died, Nath and Lydia were small. At that time, Marilyn began to question her life. She decided to disappeared and left her family to finish her college degree and become a doctor. But finally, she returned and give up her dream again when she learned that she was pregnant with Hannah. Her third child. She was so upset. And when Marilyn returned, she poured herself into Lydia and try to help her to become a doctor. Because Lydia, their second child, inherited her mother's blue eyes. She is the one who looks most American. Marilyn think Lydia can finish her dream. And James also looking forward Lydia can really integrate into the society, not like the other two children.
