2 Reflections on “Everything Inside” By Edwidge Dantical “Everything Inside” by Edwidge Danticat is a collection of eight short stories that tell the stories of ordinary people as they navigate the matters of love, family and their immigration experiences in the United States. The book has been credited as one of the best books of 2019. The short story “Without Inspection” is one of the short stories that captures the experiences and hardships faced by the immigrants in the United States as they search for a better life in the country. Arnold, a character in the story fled from his native Haiti to come to the United States in search for a better life. In his voyage to the country he survives after been rescued from drowning on the beach by another immigrant Darline. As immigrants they fall in love with Darline and takes her son Paris as his own. However, despite his life turning out to be great at first he has an accident at a construction site by falling in to a cement mixer which leads to his death. “Dosas” is another story that indicates unlikely friendship and love between immigrants. The story is centered on Elsie and her husband Blaise who are Haitian immigrants in the United States. Elsie works as caregiver for the aging and the ill in the country trying to makes ends meets and build a life in the country. However, his husband fall in love with Olivia another Haitian immigrant and leaves his wife for her. After some time Blaise calls Elsie her ex-wife with the pretense that Olivia was kidnapped and needs $5000 to pay her ransom. Elsie reluctantly sends Blaise the money only to discover later that there was no kidnapping and that her husband had used the money to move back to Haiti with Olivia. From the two stories it can be seen how immigrants took up low paying jobs in the United States with the aim of building a better life in the country. The stories also show how the immigrants fell in love with each other in a foreign country.
