Exam procedure: 

 

 

Students need two devices: a computer with access to Canvas and a second device (smart phone, iPad, etc) with a camera and Zoom installed. You will do your exam through Canvas (Quizzes) on your computer and the exam will be monitored through the second device. Make sure both devices are plugged in. Do not run out of battery power!! Turn your ringer off your phone but keep the volume on. Download Zoom onto your secondary device (smart phone, iPad, etc) and log into Zoom using their SFU account (ie: through sfu.zoom.us). If you already have it downloaded onto your device, then make sure you have the latest version (5.3): https://support.zoom.us/hc/enus/articles/201362233-Upgrade-update-to-the-latest-version Click on the Zoom link given for the exam monitoring. This will begin at 2:30pm on October 13 th although you can log in early. o https://sfu.zoom.us/j/81893208940?pwd=amNJU0FYeTlWOTlEZXBONzZMdXlkZz09 meeting ID: 818 9320 8940, Passcode: 864194 If your screen name on Zoom is your SFU login ID, please change it to your full name (first name followed by last name). You can change this by clicking on the three dots at the top right of your video. We need to see your name for ID verification. Set your second device up as in the below picture. About 16” away from your workstation, propped up by a book (or on your mini tripod if you are an influencer and are used to staging your own selfies…haha) and facing you and your computer screen.

You must enter one of three breakout rooms. This is an option at the bottom of your screen (only if you have upgraded to the latest version of Zoom, though). o Breakout room #1: Last name begins with A-Gi o Breakout room #2: Last name begins with Gr-O o Breakout room #3: Last name begins with Q-Z Your invigilators will spend the first while verifying student ID’s, so have your ID ready. We will all begin the exam at the same time. Clear your workstation, as the exam will be closed book. You may use a simple calculator and some blank paper for calculations. The only thing visible on the computer screen should be

 

Canvas. The invigilators will be looking for the Canvas screen and watching your motions. We may ask you to adjust your second device’s camera angle and perhaps focus on your computer screen momentarily. If you have a question during the exam, please ask it in Discussions in Canvas. Do not ask it in Zoom, as all the students in the entire class will be disturbed! I will be recording the exam session, in part to verify identities.

Want to test your set up? Do it on Friday, Oct 9th at 3:30-4:00pm: https://sfu.zoom.us/j/83168916643?pwd=V0JIVmpoLzU2NkkrODlaYjV4VG85UT09 meeting ID: 831 6891 6643 passcode: 774712

The exam itself:      

  

Closed book You can use a simple calculator (not on your phone) You can have 2 sheets of blank paper and some pencils/pens on your workstation It will take 2 hours maximum and will begin after we have verified all the ID’s You will not be able to go backwards to previous questions, only forwards I will tell you at the beginning of the exam how many questions there will be along with suggested time to allocate to each question. I will repeat how long to allocate to each question at the start of each question. Each student’s order of questions is random and there are various versions of each type of question that are given randomly. There will be short answer and calculation type questions. Material covered will be anything from the first 4 modules. I will not test you on something I haven’t talked about in class....
