EMOM - Operations Management Coursework Assignment Brief 2020-21 Introduction This is an individual piece of coursework which is worth 100% of the total grade for the Operations Management course. In this assignment you are required to study a real-world operation, assess how well it is designed and managed and offer recommendations for its improvement. You are asked to write a report which addresses the three questions listed below under ‘Your Task’. You may select one ‘operation’ of any type – this could be within manufacturing or services; it could be a private or a public sector organisation. You must include the name and address of the head office of the operation you decide to study in your report, even if the operation is derived from an internet source. The operation you choose to study can either be known to you (e.g. because you are a customer, or you work for that organisation), or it can be identified through internet searches. In either case, for this assignment you will need to collect some primary and /or secondary data. The data may, for example, be based on your own observations or perceptions of the operation as a customer. However, further research into the dynamics of the operation would clearly produce better results. Please note also that the sources of your data should be clearly acknowledged via the normal academic procedure. If you have to make any assumptions, based on unavailable evidence, you must explicate those in the report.

Your Task Having selected a specific operation that you wish to study, you are required to write an academic report which provides analysis, evaluation and recommendations for improvement in each of the areas corresponding to the three questions below. The three questions are equally weighted, and hence you should endeavor to put equal emphasis /effort in each of them. Question 1: Introduction to the operation, operations characteristics and design Briefly introduce the operation. Then, provide an analysis of the operation in terms of: a) the transformation process (i.e., transformed resources, transforming resources, and type(s) of transformation taking place), b) the operation’s output(s) in terms of the 4Vs; this analysis should include comparisons with at least one other operation, and c) operations performance objectives in line also with the competitive priorities of the operation. Given the above basic analysis, use appropriate concepts and tools/techniques from the module to assess how well the operation is designed and managed in at least one of the areas listed below. You are free to select any area(s) you wish. Your assessment should consider the operations characteristics (e.g. 4Vs), competitive priorities and performance objectives of the operation, and draw on credible sources of evidence (i.e. primary and /or secondary data). If relevant, suggest ways in which the operation could be improved in the chosen area, using relevant concepts and tools from the course.  Design of operations processes  Design of facility layout  Capacity planning

Question 2: Operations improvement and project management 2

This part focuses on quality and continuous improvement and /or project management. Use appropriate concepts and tools and techniques taught during the course to assess the planning and management of the operation in at least two of the areas specified below. Again, you are free to select any area(s) you wish. In your assessment, consider how well the operation is planned and managed, using relevant primary or secondary data. You can also recommend ways the operation could improve in your chosen areas, referring back to the theories and concepts covered in the course.  Operations improvement and quality management  Lean thinking  Project management Question 3: Managing collaborative operations and technology This part focuses on collaborative (inter-organisational) aspects of operations and /or the role that IT as well as new technologies may be playing in the design and management of the chosen operation. Apply appropriate theoretical models, concepts or tools taught during the course to assess how well the operation works with external organisations to achieve its performance objectives, and /or how well it leverages IT and new technologies to attain performance. You must focus on at least two of the areas listed below. Your assessment could also include recommendations for how the operation could improve in any given area(s).  Collaborative relationships with external organisations  Make or buy decisions and the role of purchasing  The use of IT in improving inter-organisational coordination  The application of new technologies (e.g. smart operations, robotics, mobility)

Submission requirements 

   

The assignment should not exceed 3,000 words in length. This word count limit excludes figures, tables, references and any appendices used. Any submissions that exceed this upper limit will be (slightly) penalised. Please present your analysis and assessment in a concise manner. Make use of tables, figures and appendices whenever possible. All of these must be numbered using the Arabic system (e.g. Figure 1, Table 1). We strongly recommend that you structure your assignment according to three questions you are required to cover. The brief introduction to the operation you chose to study should be included in your answer to Question 1. You should include any conclusions you might wish to draw and /or any recommendations for improvement (per thematic area) as part of your answer to the corresponding question. For example, any recommendations for improvement in the area of quality or project management should be included in the part answering Question 2. Use the Harvard system of referencing for in-text citations as well as for producing a list of references at the end of your manuscript. Please note that plagiarism is taken very seriously as an academic offence and is penalised according to the Programme’s existing rules and regulations. You should submit your coursework online via the DROPBOX on the Brightspace platform. The submission deadline is Wednesday 16th December 2020, at 17.00 hours (CET). Please contact the lecturers if you have any queries or require any clarifications. Good luck!

Report assessment criteria The following criteria apply for grading the report:  Quality and depth of analysis and assessment e.g. clear links between your data and theoretical concepts or tools/techniques (from the course) used to analyse and assess the operation. Critical reflections regarding any differences between theory and the data you collect are also welcome.  Well-motivated recommendations for improvement per thematic area covered – in particular, there should be clear links among collected data, your analysis in terms operations assessment, and the offered recommendations for operations improvement. Such recommendations should be as specific as possible and feasible. 3

Research effort e.g. collection of primary data, depth of secondary data sources used, design of research. If you wish, you may include a short section on the methods used to collect and analyse the data (e.g. interviews with manager(s) or questionnaires), but this is optional. Report structure and presentation e.g. addressing all aspects specified in the assignment, flow of argumentation, report coherence, level of English language (grammar and syntax), quality of tables/figures and appendices, and appropriate academic referencing.
