OBJECTIVE To recognize the different kinds of specialized stems
SPECIMENS Ginger (Zingeber officinale), camia (Hedychium coronarium), potato, rose, squash or amplaya stems, stick plant (Euphorbia tirucalli), suha (Citrus maxima), Elodea, cadena de amor (Antigonon leptopus)
PROCEDURE 1. Examine thoroughly the specimens and take note of the part where you find the modifications.
2. Draw the specialized stems and indicate the type of specialization.
PROCEDURE Draw and identify the different specialized stems. Ginger: Rhizome
Potato: Tubers
Camia: Rhizome
Rose: Prickles
Squash: Tendrils
Suha: Prickles
Cadena de amor: Tendrils
Stick Plant: Phylloclade
Elodea: Cladodes
QUESTIONS 1. How would you differentiate a potato (Solanum tuberosum) from a sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas)? Potatoes and sweet potatoes are both originally from America, belong to the tuberous plants and look - more or less - similar. Botanically, they are not related to each other. The potato (Solanum tuberosum) is a nightshade plant, the sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas), however, belongs to the bindweed family.
2. In bulbs, which part of the stem stores food? Scale leaves. Apart of a bulb stem that has modified leaves that store food.
3. What are the main functions of underground stems? Underground stems are modified plants that derive from stem tissue but exist under the soil surface. The main functions of underground stem are storage tissues for food and nutrients and perennation survival from one growing season to the next....
