Ends Nov 18, 2021 6:30 PM Each of the following passages contains a fallacy. For each passage, name the fallacy it contains, and then explain why it is an example of that fallacy.

1. The federal budget deficits are destroying this country. Just ask any working stiff; he'll tell you. Ad Baculum fallacy :  The statement represents a call to arms,  author supports the premise of harming the country because of the federal budget deficits

2. The Occupy Wall Street protestors say they're against greed and corporate corruption. But they're really just a bunch of whiny, unwashed hipsters who are trying to avoid having to get a real job. Ad Hominem Circumstantial is present in this fallacy  States the protesters a really just a bunch of whiny, unwashed hipsters who are trying to avoid having to get a real job  Author of this statement is trying to convince readers not to protest against Occupy Wall street  Provides a circumstance to the arguers as to the explanation of their purpose

3. The National Post says that a proposal to force companies to embrace corporate social responsibility amounts to a denial of the basic principles of the market economy. But you know that's false-after all, it's from the National Post! Ad Populum  States a proposal to force companies to embrace Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)  Proven to be a false statement due to the source of National Post which is potentially filled with bias 4. Geraldo says that students who cheat on exams should not automatically be expelled from school. I can't believe he thinks cheating is such a trivial thing! Fallacy contains Straw Man  Presents an argument in which students who cheat on exams should not automatically be expelled (Poses as X)  I can’t believe he thinks cheating is such a trivial thing (Y)  Y does not relate to X 5. Kelly says that many women who live in predominantly Muslim countries are discriminated against. But how the heck would she know? She's not a Muslim. Ad Homminem Abusive  Identifies faults with the person instead of relating to the argument  Kelly’s claim is being dismissed based on the fact of her Religion 

6. Of course elves exist. No scientist has ever proved that they don't exist. Ad Ignorantiam  Statement indicates a conclusion which elves do not exist  Since no scientists have proven they do not exists, they must not exist  Due to ignorance, we lack the knowledge to find whether they exist or not

7. The most blatant occurrence of recent years is all these knuckleheads running around protesting nuclear power-all these stupid people who do not research at all and who go out and march, pretending they care about the human race, and then go off in their automobiles and kill one another." (Ray Bradbury) Ad 

8. The former mayor was convicted of drug possession, and he spent time in jail. So you can safely ignore anything he has to say about legalizing drugs. Ad Verecundiam

9. Of course I believe in miracles. I defy you to show me one bit of proof that miracles don't happen. Ad Baculum Statements

10. Professor, I deserve a better grade than a D on my paper. Look, my parents just got a divorce. If they see that I got a D, they will just blame each other, and the fighting will start all over again. Give me a break. Ad Misericordium...
