Description

Essay: Answer the following questions based on your own understanding. 1. Differentiate Experimental Research from Field Research Experimental research is a scientific approach to research, where one or more independent variables are manipulated and applied to one or more dependent variables to measure their effect on the latter. When it comes to place, many experiments are carried out in the laboratory, where control can be exerted on the extraneous variables, thereby eliminating them. Other experiments are carried out in a less controllable setting. The choice of setting used in research depends on the nature of the experiment being carried out. On the other hand in Field research number of respondents, it depends on how

many respondents is needed to justify the reliability of a research. Field

research typically begins in a specific setting although the end objective of the study is to observe and analyze the specific behavior of a subject in that setting. It can be too expensive and time consuming in some cases unlike in experimental research. Additionally unlike experimental research the ability to replicate the research is lower in field research, same with the ability to generalize the results. 2. Give one example of situation or scenario that shows the importance of conducting Field Research in the Philippine setting. Example will be the study of a Swedish researcher which is Sanna Saksela Bergholm, her objective was to examine how informal social networks and contact between Filipino migrant workers in Finland and family members in the Philippines contribute to a secure future for the Filipinos. She also wanted to study the impact of this contact on the migrants’ and their family members’ lives. For me this research is important here in the Philippines because the government or the people will be informed that even though there is a lot of OFW around the globe, still our country is

suffering from poverty due to unemployment. 3. Whose interests are the most important to be served in doing Field Research? The interests of society at large? The interests of the community being researched? The interests of the researcher? It will be the interest of the community being researched, because that certain community will benefit the most in the study. 4. Is Qualitative Research more prone to bias than Quantitative Research? Bias reflects the way we do resesarch, not the type of method we use, in my view. As long as you are reflexive (which more scientists doing qualitative research tend to do), you are more capable of avoiding biases. Quantitative methods tend to advocate that they tend to do objective work, which tends to hide the personal lens used to analyze any data, collected in whichever way. However it can also be difficult for the researcher to distance themselves from a

bias in the research study. 5. Why do you think that doing an actual Field Research is hard to do at present? First because it is more expensive and time consuming. The notes have to be exactly what the researcher says but the nomenclature is very tough to follow. Also it is an interpretive method and this is subjective and entirely dependent on the ability of the researcher. In this method, it is impossible to control external variables and this constantly alters the nature of the research. 6. Could Archival Research be a helpful way to obtain a data about the COVID 19 pandemic? Not exactly about Covid-19, but regards to pandemic, since this is not a first time that an outbreak happen in each country. So Archival research can be helpful to obtain the about the pandemic, they can get resources from the books or research from the past that is related to the pandemic, but if they want specifically about a COVID-19, they won’t find any article about it, because this is

the first time that COVID-19 is known. 7. What do you think is the weakness of a survey questionnaire if there is a “neutral” on the options for a respondent to choose and why? If the goal of the question is to understand different opinions, we should not only use a neutral point but also a “Not sure/Don’t Know/Not Applicable” option. This would allow respondents in scenarios 2 and 3 to provide an answer that is true to their experience. 8. What option is more expensive? Answering questionnaire printed on a paper? Or conducting interview? Or a combination of both? Why?’ Combination of both will be more expensive because answering questionnaire printed on a paper and conducting interview is already expensive individually, how much more if you combine together. 9. For an in-depth explanation of a certain phenomenon, what type of question is better to be used on a questionnaire? Dichotomous or open-ended questions? Why? Open-ended to avoid inaccurate result. From the word itself “in-depth explation” answering a question from yes or no, won’t give you an in-depth explanation. That is why it’s better to use open-ended question to let the respondent explain it further and to gather more information. 10.Write three open-ended questions that can be correlated to the current situation of the society. Write the three open-ended questions and explain what you want to find out on the questions you had written.

∙ How would you describe your experience during COVID-19? We all know that every individual in our country was affected by the pandemic, however since we have kind status of in life and different way of living, it impact us differently. I want to know how it differs from every person. ∙ What have you learned from this pandemic? Every challenge in our life has a lesson in return, so this COVID, no

one wants this to happen but it’s already here, making our life miserable. But what we can do is to reflect and check what can we learn from it. ∙ How can we protect ourselves from the coronavirus? Aside from wearing a mask, avoiding crowded areas, disinfecting our hands and observing physical distancing, I’m sure there are still other ways

to protect ourselves from COVID-19, and we can share that to

everyone, to protect them too....
