Description

Fallacy #6: The Fallacy of the Mean (Middle Ground Fallacy) The middle ground fallacy refers to accepting a compromise or middle point between two extremes as being the truth. The middle ground fallacy is erroneous because outcomes are based on a subjective assessment of the middle ground in a given situation, instead of facts, which are objective, yet generally ignored. In essence, an outcome is trusted simply because it represents the middle ground in a scenario presenting two extreme conditions. An example of the middle ground fallacy can be demonstrated in splitting the cost for a lunch. Individual A accompanies individual B for lunch, the latter of whom orders an extra-large pizza and several sides totalling $45.00. Individual A offers to pay $5.00 as they had one pizza slice out of everything which was bought, however individual B demands that the payment is split in half amongst the two of them. A bystander waiting in line interferes when the argument between individual A and B escalates and suggests that individual A should pay at least one quarter of the payment if not half so the problem can be resolved. Though a middle ground is reached, the final outcome is unfair to individual A who had to pay considerably more than $5.00. The use of the middle ground fallacy in this scenario wrongfully increased the portion of the payment for individual A and decreased the portion of the payment for individual B. As can be seen from this example, the outcome determined from reaching a middle ground will not always be true or just.
