Description

Intervention in Family Practice SOCS2180 Family Genogram Assignment A family genogram is an exciting tool for understanding your family and how it works. A genogram is a diagram of your family. It contains information you would find on a multi-generational family tree or genealogy such as names and dates of birth and death of each individual. In addition to this the genogram is organized to illustrate important individual characteristics such as personality, vocation, and health. However, genogram dramatically depart from genealogies in their representation of family relationships. While a family genealogy will give you basic information about marriage and the offspring of that marriage, a genogram uses specific symbols to depict the emotional relationships of the system to which they belong. For example, a genogram can show if a marriage was happy or troubled and if a child had a close relationship with the mother but was distant from the father. It can also show how a relationship came to be a result of multigenerational patterns of family behaviour due to family history, values or a result of anxiety surrounding crisis. This is the strength of the genogram and why to this day it is used as a powerful tool in family social work practice. The genogram offers a snap shot view inside the family system and its internal working patterns. (Galindo, Boomer, Reagan, A Family Genogram Workbook, Educational Consultants 2006) Creating a genogram will assists you in understanding family patterns, members of your system, but the main goal is to help you gain insight that enhances your awareness of self. As you are already aware there is no greater influence in shaping our lives than the families that raised us. Worth 20% Due Date: Week 4 (Prior to class)

Assignment Outline To begin, complete a comprehensive genogram drawing that covers three generations of your family of origin. You will be evaluated based on the degree of detail you offer. If you have no contact with parties or information you obviously can’t include it, however, in your analysis you may discuss the impact of the missing pieces. The first step in creating a genogram is to identify all the parties that belong in each system. Divide your page in half and roughly draw out each generation so you can see where the generations unfold. Then add (if needed) a remarriage and step siblings. Sometimes

families are very large and it is too big to include everyone. If this is the case for you, use your judgement on whom do you think is important. The next step is to look for patterns which are repeating through generations, these can be behavioral like addiction or career choice, biological like illness and emotional like cut-off, divorce. Look at one area at a time as you develop the picture. Research Before trying to actually draw the genogram you need to watch the videos, read material to gain an understanding of what means what.
