A. In Los Angeles, California, Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center experienced a historic event on June 29th, 2008. Built-in response to the 1994 Northridge earthquake that damaged the 1955 facility. The new hospital became one of the first hospitals to meet the latest California seismic safety standards. A hospital now built to withstand a natural disaster was a historical event in Los Angeles. The Northridge earthquake caused the transportation of patients long distances for care. In response to the 1994 earthquake, California passed an amendment to an older law requiring hospitals to move their acute care and intensive care units into earthquakeresistant buildings by 2008. “The new 1.05-million-square-foot (98,000 m2) hospital is named after the late President of the United States and Governor of California Ronald Reagan (19112004). The hospital will contain fewer patient beds (525) than the one it replaces. Patient beds in the intensive-care units will be accessible to nurses and physicians from 360 degrees, and surgical floor plans will be modular, allowing them to be expanded and reconfigured as medical technology evolves” (Wikipedia, 2020). This historic event impacted the hospital's growth since it was one of the first to meet the new law enforcing California seismic safety standards. It is currently ranked the 6th best hospital in the United States, and 1st on the west coast. “Collectively, the hospitals and specialty-care facilities of the UCLA Health system make it among the most comprehensive and advanced healthcare systems in the United States. The hospital has been ranked in the top twenty in 15 of the 16 medical specialties ranked by the US News ranking. Ten of those specialties were ranked in the top ten. In 2005, the American Nurses Credentialing Center granted the medical center "Magnet" status.[4] “ (Wikipedia, 2020). It is tremendous growth for a hospital to obtain the Magnet status, to be rewarded for providing the very best in nursing care, a positive practice environment for employees, and help shape future change in the nursing profession is such an accomplishment. The Northridge Earthquake of 1994, which

shook the older 1955 facility, made it possible to construct a safer, more sustainable facility. This event marked a historic moment for the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center and allowed the hospital to grow into one of the most recognized facilities in the United States. B. The Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center provides internationally recognized patient care in nearly every medical specialty to more than 380,000 people each year from Los Angeles and around the world. This type of recognized patient care dramatically impacts access to healthcare and the quality of health in the community and beyond. Having access to an internationally recognized facility is what most potential patients would like to hear. We live in an age where healthcare options are endless. People are looking for facilities, hospitals, and medical centers that stand out from the rest. Everyone wants the best care for themselves and family members; after all, healthcare is a hefty cost. “UCLA Medical Center has research centers covering nearly all major specialties of medicine and nursing as well as dentistry and is the primary teaching hospital for the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and the UCLA School of Nursing.” (Wikipedia, 2020). With more than 200 medical practices throughout Southern California, access to care is endless in the community. Being well-managed means patients will keep returning for all their healthcare needs. UCLA Medical Center has continuously proven its dedication to the community. The staff consistently pride themselves on the work done in the hospital and medical centers. For a team of doctors, nurses, and administrative staff to speak highly of the hospital is a fantastic contribution to the community. The general population can feel secure knowing they will receive above-average care just on the numerous reports on UCLA Medical Center. C1. The impact Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center has on health information management technology for healthcare delivery is through its chosen EHR. CareConnect has

reduced medical errors, protected patients, and improved accessibility/transparency of data. Additionally, an online patient web portal benefits both patients and staff. CareConnect phased in at UCLA Medical Center from 2012 through 2013. Implementing an EHR has a significant impact on the health information management role because it offers a set of systems that will allow easy access to information. Overall, an EHR improves the patient-care process, ensures patient safety, drives evidence-driven care, helps health sciences education, and supports clinical research programs across UCLA Medical Center. The HIM role is only growing in healthcare due to facilities implementing an EHR. “Healthcare and HIM professionals have been left sprinting down technology's trail-blazed path, working to make the most of health IT systems and new data sets that have only just begun to show the true extent of their potential impact on health management and patient care.” (Dimick, 2012). The HIM role is needed to ensure information exchange is secure and private. The healthcare industry needs individuals who are proficient in Health IT to maximize EHR potential. Therefore, you can see how the health information management role has an impact at UCLA Medical Center. It is needed to continue the growth, security, and quality of care throughout the hospital. C2. How Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center uses emerging technology is to support population health initiatives. Quality and safety are the number one priority for UCLA Health. Technology is only going to advance in the coming years. Hospitals such as UCLA Medical Center utilized the perks of having access to this and implemented it a few years ago. With the use of an EHR, the hospital can analyze analytics to seek out trends or bottlenecks within the facility. Data analysts, security experts, health information managers, and information release experts are all apart of using the emerging technology to support population health. By having an EHR implemented in the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, all the staff is quickly notified

of clinical alerts, making it easier to monitor a patient’s condition and gather all relevant information such as lab results and imaging. All roles within the hospital can securely document and have an instantly organized medical record for access. Having an organized medical history impacts the hospital for patient care because it is delivered most professionally. Providing builtin safeguards for prescribing treatments that would result in an adverse event is an example of an EHR helping steer population health in the right direction. “Good data is an integral part of a population health initiative, according to Dr. Couch. "If you don't measure something, it's very hard to manage it," he said.” (Bean, 2017). Therefore, having an EHR helps UCLA Medical Center better manage care for patients and ultimately provide better health care. Having up-todate, accurate, and complete information about patients at the point of care is an excellent asset for both patients and staff. The key to ensuring the quality of care is having the tools necessary to provide it. Providing quick access to patient records for more coordinated, efficient care is the groundwork for using emerging technology to support population health initiatives at UCLA Medical Center.
