James Madison feels that factions are inevitable and need to be controlled so because the government cannot punish them without violent consequences.

A faction is a group of citizens united by a passion or interest. If Madison were alive today, he would see the factions of work unions, large company lobbyists, and religious groups.

Two methods of curing the mischief of factions are removing the causes that make people protest and controlling their efforts. This is not possible today.

Two methods of removing the causes are to destroy liberty and make everyone the same. These would not be possible today.

Madison feels that the first remedy is that this is a cure worse than the disease because liberty is essential for our country.
