Description

Villanella - Luca Marenzio - Ad Una Fresca Riva - Multiple voices - Acapella - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NOVA60T9al0 - Published in 1585 in il terzo libro delle villanelle a tre voci - Secular / madrigal (written in the renaissance time period) - Talks about a goddess Neapolitan Music - Toto’ (Antonio De Curtis) - Malafemmena (Roberto Murolo) - 1951; one of the most popular Italian songs and considered a classic in the Neapolitan song genre; dedicated to his wife Diana Bandini after they split in 1950 - Lyrics are describing his love-hate relationship with his wife because she hurt him really badly Some verses describe her in a really awful way (worse than a viper) but also compliments her in other verses (sweet as sugar) - String instrument (guitar in album cover) and a single voice (monody) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kNvLoknvSmU - Renato Carusone - Tu Vuò Fà L’Americano - Neapolitan language song - Horn, piano, clapping - Talks about someone wanting to be like an American but they should remember that they were born in Italy and that they are a Neapolitan - This song was considered a satire due to the Americanization that occurred in Southern Italian after WW2 - Pino Daniele - Napule è - Talks about Naples in a positive and negative way (naples is a thousand colors/naples is a dirty waste of paper) - Obviously sounds like someone that is from Naples talking about it since he knows what Naples is like - Piano, mandolin A lot of the Neapolitan music I listened to had to do with Neapolitan identity (like Carusone’s and Daniele’s songs), while the villanella really wasn’t talking about a specific subject and it was a little ambiguous. The Neapolitan music consisted of a lot of string instruments like the guitar or mandolin while the Villanella did not have any instruments and relied only on vocals....
