Film Analysis 4 Whiplash

This was my first time seeing the movie Whiplash. Since it was my first time seeing it, I thought it was a good movie overall, it seemed fast at some times. Throughout the movie it seemed that the whole theme was one character with one goal, Andrew had a goal to be an amazing drummer. The film was a very dark movie in the sense of the pictures being in colors of golds, black and dark greens. There were many camera movements in the film and it made it more intense. The editing throughout this film made some scenes seem fast, slow and intense at times. When the filmmakers edited the drumming shots it made it faster. When they edited the dinner scene they made it slow and it made the scene awkward to the audience because most of the film is in a fast pace. It was fast editing, the camera went around to everyone fast and it made it intense. This film mostly uses continuity editing because what happens on the screen makes as much narrative sense as possible, the screen direction is consistent from shot to shot, and the graphic, spatial, and temporal relations are maintained from shot to shot. The editing is nearly unnoticeable, you can barely tell that they edited some shots. I think the filmmakers made these choices because it makes it interesting for the audience and to keep them engaged. A pivotal scene when the sound creates emphasis by accentuating and strengthening the visual image is when Andrew is in the diner talking to Nicole and he is breaking up with her. He is telling her that he is going to be to busy with drumming and won’t have time to have a girlfriend. During this part the music becomes quiet and it shows that the filmmaker wants to emphasis their conversation and make the audience focus on them. The specific sources of sound in this scene are non diegetic sounds, we the audience only hear it even though it is suppressed in

this scene. The types of sounds that are used in this scene are dialogue between the two characters, and foley sounds. Foley sounds like people in the diner moving around and the sounds of forks and cups moving. This film does use silence expressively. It does because in the scene when Andrew and Nicole are talking in the diner, they were talking about serious things and all the music and sounds are suppressed. It gave a sense of intensity and emphasis. There are a lot of high energy sounds throughout the film. There was music throughout this whole film. Most of the music was from the jazz bad and the scenes when Andrew was drumming. There were lots of changing music though, going back and forth between the jazz band, Andrew drumming and a few scenes with songs. Music in this film was used in a dominate way to manipulate the audience’s emotions. The music in the scene’s when Andrew plays the drums get louder as he plays and intensifies. This tells the audience that Andrew is trying hard to get the beat right with the drums and how angry he is when he doesn’t get it right. Music in this film is appropriate to the story. The film was mostly about Andrew making it in the jazz band as a drummer with all his hard work and the Conductor Terence Fletcher yelling at everybody to be great in the band. In the film the music that the jazz band is playing is called Whiplash which is the name of the film. Throughout the film the band is constantly practicing this song which helps tell the story. This was mostly playing throughout the film, it gets louder when Andrew is practicing and trying to get the beat right for it. The music fits to the story since it’s mostly about musicians itself. It helps tell the story and keeps the audience interested in the film. All the music in the film makes it easier to follow the film and tell when some scenes get intense, and some are important....
