A Class Divided The film A Class Divided was designed to show students why it is important not to judge people by how they look but rather who they are inside. This is a very important lesson to learn people spend too much time looking at people not for who they are but for what ethnicity they are. One variable that I liked about the film is that it should the children how it felt to be on both sides of the spectrum. The hypothesis of the workshop was that if you out a child and let them experience what it is like to be in the group that is not wanted because of how they look and then make the other group the better people group that the child will have a better understanding of not to judge a person because of how they look but instead who they are as people. I liked the workshop because it made everyone that participated in it even the adults that took it later on realize that you can rehabilitate one’s way of thinking. The exercise showed how a child that never had any racism towards them in the exercise they turned against their friends because of the color of their eyes. The children for those two days got the chance to experience both sides of discrimination. The children once day felt segregated and inferior to the children that were placed in the group with more privilege. Then the next day the children that were placed in the privileged group were in the segregated group. The theory is if you can teach a child how to discriminate against a person that you can just as easily teach them how not to. Sometimes a person needs to feel what another person feels to understand how they treat people. Personally, I have young nephew and I feel that it would be great to put my nephew through a workshop such as this one. The lessons the workshop taught the children that went through it was invaluable. We hope that we as adults show our children learn from us the mistakes of the past and treat people equally. A lot of times unfortunately people have stigmata’s either put on them by society because of how they look or they put them on themselves and people treat them differently. The lessons that this workshop teaches are lessons that everyone should have. You can spend our entire life trying to instill the values in your children that this class does in two days, and I want my children to be kind to people as we all do; I do not want them to alienate someone because they are not the same as them, different ethnic or part of a minority group. When I was in school it was not that long-ago kids would tease me and had prejudice against me because I was super skinny than most boys my age. I believe that if my class would have gone through a workshop such as this one that maybe their attitude towards my weight would not have been what it was. The film applies to sociology because the issues that comes from how people anomies are viewed. What one person believes is pure or right in reality is not how things really are. Those beliefs are either taught by their parents or by the events that have happen in one’s life. Our beliefs and how we view right, wrong, superior races have to do with what our parents taught us sometimes that is not an easy to do to unlearn what has been taught. There is no good reason to alienate a person because of how they look or their ethnicity. That type of behavior leads to things like genocide and colonialism takes place. These are the types of behaviors that we are trying to stop from happening and the way to do that is by having workshops such as this one that teaches the children that these things are wrong, that is wrong judging people by how they look. There is nothing in how a person looks that makes them better or superior than another race or culture better than the next. The theory that best describes this workshop would have to be conflict theory, it states that there is different inequality socially and politically. The inequality is determined by

people’s ideals of what they were taught and society projects as the superior and inferior races. This film shows that there is a way to change that if you make the other side see how they affect the people they are discriminating against. It is the responsibility of the adults to stop these learned behaviors and teach the children that people are all equal, that is what needs to be instilled in the generations to come otherwise everything will stay the same. We have come a long way as a people but we still have a long way that we need to go. Nothing will ever be perfect but it should always get better. The lesson that is learned from this workshop is lessons that should be taught in every classroom all over the world maybe then we will see that we are no different from each other....
