Prof. PHI1600 Studies in Applied Ethics 10/21/18 A Class Divided- Jane Elliot The classroom experiment teaches learners an important lesson on discrimination. The teacher identifies an aspect that differentiates the learners and uses it to breed hatred among a group of students who have interacted well with one another. Each group identified as superior to the other (Blue-eyed and then brown-eyed) feel better owing to the privileges received from the teacher hence look down upon the other group (YouTube, 2017). When the privileges are reversed, and each group is made to feel inferior, the learners turn sad and angry at the way they are treated. One student even admitted to hating their teacher at that moment. The feelings displayed in the experiment are commonly expressed in the world today. Groups brought up to feel superior discriminate upon others by treating them badly based on differences in physical attributes. The discrimination breeds hatred and loss of humanity to the extent that some people are even ready to harm or even kill others. In the adult correctional department, Jane Elliot deliberately divides workers into blue-eyed and brown-eyed to give them a taste of prejudice and discrimination. She purposefully creates a foundation for discrimination of the blue-eyed people (YouTube, 2017). The experiment demonstrates that the blue-eyed workers feel annoyed when discriminated upon. The experiment reveals the strong emotions expressed by the white blue-eyed people since they feel treated unfairly. On the other hand, the brown-eyed people feel important and superior to the blue-eyed ones. The experiment demonstrates that elements of racism and discrimination are not in-born but built by human being. Notably, they become stereotypes; majority groups use them to discriminate against the minority.

Table data 2 The two experiments demonstrate that no person is beyond the influence exerted by other people, especially ones in authority. The ability to influence people can be used positively to eliminate stereotypes and prejudices previously developed. The experiments have demonstrated how it feels to be on either side (majority or minority). The video also demonstrates that differences used to discriminate other people are created and hence can be deconstructed. People in authority should positively influence others and treat each other with equality.
