Description

Name: Abbygale Sebring ____________________________ Psyc 2130 Reflection Assignment (20 points) Watch the documentary “A Class Divided” (this video is approximately one hour, give yourself time to watch the video and complete the assignment). Immediately write down your reflections to the questions below. Copy the questions onto your document and answer. Note:Do not only give your opinion on the answers. The answers should exhibit Critical Thinking and Application of Social Psychological and Child Development. You must: read your text; think about the social issues of today; consider child development aged 6-11; determine what issues impact child development, just as racism impacted the social development of the 3rdgraders in the video in 1969. Be sure to formulate your answer, use your critical thinking skills to develop the answer, and use the text book material to show your understanding of developmental theories. Use the concepts in your Reflection. Video: “A Class Divided” Frontline documentary 1.What is the difference in “racism” and “discrimination”? ● The difference between racism is that racism is more so a belief and moralism that can be traced back to your origin and believing one race is better than another. Discrimation is unjust behaviors and actions 2.What is your reaction to the documentary? ● My initial reaction was oh my gosh I can not believe they even have to have lessons on this and I thought oh my gosh do not use the N word. Honestly I was quite offended that those kids were being so hateful and using such hateful words at the beginning. After the first 10 minutes I thought this teacher is torturing them and not being fair at all. Then as it went on I thought this teacher is amazing to be teaching that discrimation is not right! I was so proud of her! I also thought it was so cool that she brought in the students when they were so much older! 3.The first part of the documentary, “A Class Divided”, was based on racism, discrimination & stereotyping in the late 1960’s and was conducted on third grade students, approximately 8 & 9 years of age. A.If this experiment were conducted today, in 2019, with 3rd grade students, what issues do you think should be addressed? Explain. (See “Note” above!) (This question is about the issues, whether psychological or sociological; it is not about whether this experiment would be allowed to be done today.)

● If the experiment were done today I feel that sociologically it would easily understood that it is not okay to be racist or discriminate but there will be a handful that will be like I was raised this way and become hateful towards that particular race. For example I have been raised that dating a different race is not okay but I’ve never been into my own race so I strongly disagree and I am currently dating a hispanic and my family have become accustomed to that and being able to realize alright she is doing this and it really is not wrong. B.In terms of cognitive development, explain how this experiment worked on the third graders. (Hint: You will need to include Piaget’s Theory of Cognitive Development in your answer) ● Piaget’s Cognitive Development is a comprehensive theory about the nature and development of human intelligence. This experiment worked due to the fact that they were raised a certain way and when the teacher addressed the issue they began to understand how wrong it is by doing activities the teacher assigned them like the playground rules. So they began to develop a sense of intelligence due to the fairness of the activities. 4.The second part of the documentary was about the experiment being conducted on adults in the mid 1980’s. Briefly discuss the following questions: (See“Note”above!) A.The adults are well past child development years yet the experiment still worked on them. How do you explain that? ● The experiment worked on the adults because of the cognitive development of the young child that the information said with them because they developed a sense of understanding with kid activities. As the Child was learning they realized that just because you had different colored eyes doesn’t mean anything but God gave you that feature and there's nothing wrong with that. When they did those activities as a child to identify wrong and right it stayed with them because they did it for a whole week on the difference between right and wrong....
