Significance of Fence

Fences are made either to keep something inside the boundaries or keep something out. In the play written by August Wilson, Fences resembles an essential title, and when one gets to the end of the play, one may see that it has many implications. At first glance, it appears to be evident where the play's title originates from – Troy and Cory invest a great deal of energy assembling a fence. Throughout the play, we see the fence steadily achieve fruition. This fence is substantially more than only a fence; it's a mind-boggling image that sums up the entire play. August Wilson utilizes the model of a 'fence' in various events in his play, Fences. Three of the most important events fences symbolize are protection Rose is looking out for her family, Troy Maxson's relationship with his family, and Troy fencing to repel Death. As Critic Sheri Metzger says, “At the beginning of the play, Troy thinks he is building a fence to please Rose. She wants a fence that will keep all those she loves safe inside its walls. Later, after Alberta’s death, Troy completes the fence to keep danger, death, outside its walls”. All this makes the fence the major symbolic meaning of the play which plays a vital role through the play.

All through the play readers can see how 'Fences' are utilized to ensure the character, Rose’s desire to be protected. At an opportune time, Rose protects herself by singing, ''Jesus, be a

fence all around me every day. Jesus, I want you to protect me as I travel on my way'' (Act one Scene two). By Rose marking this melody, one can see Rose's craving for safety. To Rose, a fence is an image of her love. Her aching for a fence signifies that Rose is looking for protection for herself and her family. Bono discloses to Cory and Troy why Rose needs a fence worked around their yard. Within the play Bono (Troy's work partner) says "Some people build fences to keep people out, and other people build fences to keep people in. Rose wants to hold on to you all. She loves you."(Act 2 scene 1). Neither Cory nor Troy understands why Rose demands that they finish the fence. Being an outsider, Bono understands the necessity of building a fence that Rose craves for so long.

There are fences which creates separation amongst Troy and his family; he has kept them separated from a piece of himself mostly by fighting with his son and also cheating on his wife. Troy's effort at controlling his child(Cory) make an imaginary fence that keeps Cory isolate d from his family for a long time. Firstly, Troy and Cory engage in a fight where at the end Cory says,” Tell Mama I’ll be back for my things” and Troy replies,” They’ll be on the other side of that fence” (Act 2 scene 4). By this, Troy came up with a barrier between him and his son Also critic Richard Hornby says” In this classic father-son agon, each has an opportunity to kill the other, but draws back. Tragedy averted, the son goes off to join the Marines, returning only for his father’s funeral years later, confronting the many fences that have figured in their lives— “fences to keep people out, and fences to keep people in”’. After the fight Troy never sees his Cory and all that can be seen is the fence that was created during their fight. Similarly, After Troy cheated on rose there came a barrier between their relationship when finally, the child was home. In Act 2 scene 3 Rose says” from right now…This child got a mother. But you a womanless

man.” Rose adopted the child but there was a fence like structure Rose built between their relationship by not accepting Troy as her husband anymore

The fence also symbolizes a way to keep Death out and keep Troy in so that death cannot further harm all that he loved. After Troy found out Alberta has died giving birth to a child Troy says” All right . . . Mr. Death. See now . . . I'm gonna tell you what I'm gonna do. I'm gonna take and build me a fence around this yard. See? I'm gonna build me a fence around what belongs to me. And then I want you to stay on the other side” (Act 2 scene 2). Troy has already realized he lost a loved one but still he challenges death mentioning that he will complete the fence and keep death on the other side. Alberta is gone forever, however, by building a fence troy will keep all the grief of losing Alberta outside the fence and also keep himself protected from death. By this, we can also conclude that Troy wants to keep everything out whereas Rose wants to keep everything inside. The significance importance of fence in the play was keeping death out mostly for Troy to keep death away causing any harm.

A fence played a significant role in the life of the Maxon family in most cases, the fences divided the family rather than keeping them safe and protected. Rose’s motive to keep everyone in the family safeguarded and United failed. However, at one-point Cory returns home at his dad’s funeral as a Marine but still in Cory’s heart was forever fenced outside the fence. In the end, the importance of fence most important symbolic meaning of the fence was when a way to heaven opens for Troy as Gabriel blows his trumpet and sets Troy free (Hornby,Richard). A fence which played a major role in the life of Troy and his family....
