Rape: A Hidden National Crisis When simply looking at the big picture, it is easy to receive the impression that rape both the revised and legacy definition is a much smaller issue in the United States than other ongoing crimes such as, property crime and Larceny theft (Figure 1). With this idea in mind, many citizens and judicial powers ignore the fact that rape continues to increase with every new year. This makes it an important issue to the public that requires more attention from those in power and much stricter punishments to offender.
FIGURE 1. The data presented in this visual represents the national crime rates in the United States as of 2016. Looking at this data, it seems as though rape is not an urgent issue nationally, presenting this data alone has caused for other vital information about the topic to be ignored.

FIGURE 2. The legacy definition of rape only included forced penetration of the vagina. The revised definition of rape was established in 2013 and included anal penetration along with the original definition. Together these two definitions make for startling crime rates of rape around the country. This bar graph shows that the biggest rates are coming from the south region. This is where most efforts to stop the crime need to be focused.
FIGURE 3. The consistent acceleration in rape rates across a 6-year period nationally. This demonstrates that the issue does not receive enough attention and does not result in a strict enough punishment therefore, continuing to happen and actually increasing in numbers. The annual increase in rapes suggests that this is a national crisis that needs to be dealt with on a bigger scale by both our judicial department and the citizens of this country.
Reflective Analysis How and why the data set was selected - I selected this data set because I saw many trends that do not get talked about or examined often. It seemed to me as though when it comes down to it these numbers are presented to the public in a wrong way that causes the entire population to focus on the wrong issues rather than the ones truly negatively impacting our society. How I selected this specific data and why I visualized it in this form - Out of all the data sets available on the FBI’s data base, I selected this specific data because the topic truly angered me. As a female college student I believe this issue deserves more recognition. I visualized it in this way because it seemed to be an effective way to present the issue and then showcase the evidence. Who was the target audience and what was the purpose - The target audience of this report is mainly everyday citizens of this country who need to visually see the problem at hand and those in power in our judicial branch who can now understand why a stricter punishment is needed regarding this crime. The overall purpose was the bring attention to the increasing rates of rape in the country and present an explanation for why it is not being dealt with effectively. How I ensured that my visualization of the data is fair, accurate, and clear - The visualization I created are based on the raw data straight from the FBI’s data base. I included all data sets in the first visual to be clear on the overview and to be fair by presenting other pressing issues, not just rape. I then double checked the numbers entered to make these visuals to ensure they were accurate.
