Bupp 1 Alexandrea Bupp SKW 101 Samantha Barrett 28 October 2019 Personal Experience / Learning Style Essay In this paper, I will discuss my learning style and a personal experience that goes along with it. To demonstrate this claim, I will tie specific instances of each of my learning style results into an example from my high school study groups. I was amazed how accurate my results were to how I learn and study. I am an ESFJ, which stands for Extrovert, Sensing, Feeling, and Judging. As I learned from my results, I value loyalty and tradition. I am generous with my effort, time and emotions. I often put others before myself and feel for others as if their concerns and problems were my own. I like to think that staying connected to practical realities around me and observing specific things is a good way to live. My personal example is from a high school experience. For many of my classes, my teachers would set up study groups after school. Forming study groups was a very effective strategy to enhance my learning. This was because groups share unique insights and learn from each other, which is why I highly benefited from them. My other peers could also help explain confusing concepts in a different way for others to understand. My study groups were particularly effective for completing projects, developing presentations and preparing for exams. After taking the Jung Personality Test, I realized that each of my learning styles were demonstrated while attending the study groups. Since I am an Extrovert (E), I am an outgoing

Bupp 2 person and enjoy learning through interaction and verbal communication. Therefore, attending the study groups helped me learn and study tremendously. My second result is Sensing (S), which means I am generous with my effort, time and emotions. I often like to see things straightforward. When attending my study groups, I enjoyed the fact that I was provided with concrete learning experiences first, before jumping right into the book. I often seek cooperation and feel this is the best accomplished when everyone follows the same set of rules and instructions. For example, I enjoy teachers who let me know exactly what is expected of them and allow me to take in the information at my own pace. I tend to be serious and practical, especially when caring for others. I typically enjoy routine and often keep a regular schedule that allows me to be organized and productive. While at the study groups, my teachers were organized and had a set plan of what to go over, and because of that I felt calm and comfortable while attending. My third result, Feeling (F), means that I like to learn through focusing on human values and needs. I prefer to learn in a positive, environment. I prefer to learn from a personable teacher rather than one who is distant and antisocial. I also learn best when connecting with others. For instance, working in groups and partner work are essential components of successful learning for me. Hence, the study groups helped me express my learning style, and Feeling (F) in particular. Last, Judging (J), was also shown during my study groups. Judging means that I organize all my life events and, as a rule, I stick to my plans. This was crucial when I was in my study groups because I needed to be organized and know what I am doing before I do it. I needed to have the material organized and in order. Organizational learning is a process of creating, retaining, and transferring knowledge. My organization has improved greatly over time as I have

Bupp 3 gained experience. From my study group experiences in high school, I was able to create knowledge and demonstrate each of my learning styles. All in all, I benefit from study groups. As I have learned from my own learning style, many students, including myself, develop their own study methods over their years in school. While one's study methods may work excellently, one can still find ways to improve their learning abilities and sharpen their minds. By joining study groups, I have had the opportunity to observe a wide variety of new study methods in action. When reading over my learning type results, most of them were completely in line with how I learn and study. As I learned from my results and study groups, I tend to learn best through collaboration, hands-on experience, and memorization. I am happiest when I am in a highly structured environment where harmony and collaboration are encouraged. I am usually extremely diligent and responsible in my studies and am quick to pick up and memorize material. I am a careful note taker, but I am also observant and look around to make sure everyone in the class feels included. Most ESFJs, including myself, tend to be facilitators in the classroom; I like helping my fellow peers who are struggling and give encouragement. I greatly desire order in my learning environment. I will feel frustrated and unable to focus if my teacher is vague about their expectations. Other information I learned from my results and study groups is that I am a tactile learner. I like to learn by touching and doing. I understand and remember things through physical movement. I am for sure a “hands-on” learner who prefers to touch, move, build, or draw what I learn, and I tend to learn better when some type of physical activity is involved. The study groups impacted my learning style and I got to put it to good use during them. I also learned that I need to be active and take frequent breaks, I often speak with my hands and with gestures, and I

Bupp 4 sometimes have difficulty sitting still. As a tactile learner, I enjoy taking things apart and put things together, and I tend to find reasons to tinker and move around when I become bored. I may be very well coordinated and have good athletic ability, as I do love playing sports. I can easily remember things that were done but may have difficulty remembering what I saw or heard in the process. I often communicate by touching, and I appreciate physically expressed forms of encouragement. Also, it is important that ESFJs feel at home in the classroom and feel that their teachers respect them. If a teacher criticizes me, then I become uncomfortable. I will lose respect for teachers who are highly critical or who are more focused on competition than cooperation. The harmonious atmosphere of the classroom is just as important to an ESFJ as the clarity of the content being taught. One’s learning style has more influence than they realize. They change the way one person internally represents experiences, the way one may recall information, and even the words one chooses. When someone learns and understands their own learning styles, they can use techniques better suited to them. This will improve the speed and quality of everyone’s learning, due to them knowing what works for them. Everyone has and always will have different learning styles and understandings of material. ESFJs love to help people, and that is what makes us stand out. I am always willing to go the extra mile to help someone in need. But I also need to learn that taking time out for myself is not selfish. Few personality types are as practical and caring as ESFJs. I am known for my social skills and am good at creating and maintaining a secure, stable and friendly environment for myself, and my loved ones....
