Problem 10 I decided to type these as I know my hand writing sucks. A) I found least squares analysis pretty interesting and have used variations of it before in the research lab that I work in/past classes. I’ve pretty much exclusively used polynomial based least squares but I would be curious see what it looks like with a range of different functions used for approximation. I’m sure that would make some of the calculations more difficult as calculating polynomial derivatives is fairly trivial. B) I took differential equations (33b) a long time ago in a quarter where I took 5 classes total and I also didn’t really like my professor that much so I ended up not really learning the material well at first. Because of this it was somewhat difficult for me to comprehend behavior of IVPs and BVPs when they were introduced. However, by doing the homework and reading the textbook in conjunction with the lectures I think I now have a very good understanding of differential equations at least to the extent in which an undergraduate should. C) I applied to PhD programs (still haven’t heard back at the time this is written) and hope/expect to get in somewhere studying either applied math or biomathematics depending on the school. Part of my inspiration to pursue graduate school was from the lab I work in where I pretty much just do linear algebra and write code in matlab. A lot of the material we covered is very applicable to the work I’ve been doing and the work that I hope to continue to do in the future especially the computational exercises from the homeworks. D) I thought the final was fair and that anyoneone that did all the hw and watched all the lectures should have a pretty good chance of doing well. That being said I can say pretty confidently that it would have been difficult for me to finish this test sitting down in a classroom within three hours. But I thought it was a good test for the circumstances....
