For this assignment, I would like to profile abortion. Abortion is the termination of pregnancy by the removal of a fetus. Abortions can be traced back as far as 1550 BCE in Egypt. The earliest known evidence of abortion was from an ancient Egyptian medical document called Embers Papyrus. Common barriers to accessing safe abortions are religious stigma, mandatory waiting periods, high cost, and mandatory counseling. Abortion is often viewed as a political issue, but one-quarter of American women will have an abortion over their lifetime, so it is considered extremely common. The reason I chose this topic because our current President Donald Trump openly stated during his presidential campaign that he wanted to overturn Roe vs Wade. Liptak notes, ''Over the next four years, the president of the United States could appoint four or more justices to the Supreme Court,'' Mr. Davis said. ''And that is why it is so critically important that conservatives turn out and vote'' (Liptak,2020). The relationship between cultural beliefs and biases can be positive, negative, or strained. In my concept map, my cultural beliefs are religious. The first connection I made was the religious stigma that abortion is immoral and is a violation of the ten commandments. While most people within the religious community view abortion as negative. Women who choose to have an abortion are judged harshly for terminating their pregnancy. These women are often viewed as being irresponsible or promiscuous. For a woman who has decided to terminate her pregnancy, it is often done for financial reasons. The cultural beliefs and biases identified in the map help you better understand the pressure that the religious community put on women who are considering abortion. In my concept map, the social roles I identified are activism and gender roles.

It is my opinion that being a woman and an activist are both important social roles that are necessary to ensure women have the right to terminate their pregnancies without restrictions. Goldberg, states, "Some young women said that they considered reproductive rights an important factor in determining how they vote, but they struggled to see how their activism on the issue could have an effect"(Goldberg,2020). We as women should not have to defend our rights to terminate our pregnancies. The social roles identified in the map help you better understand why it is important to promote activism on women’s related issues. In my concept map, the social inequalities identified are availability to contraception and HB2. The availability of free or low-cost contraception is vital to socioeconomically challenge women. Collins states, “An estimated 70,000 to 126,000 women will lose their current free contraceptive coverage"(Collins,2020). Contraceptive use is instrumental in reducing the number of abortions performed. Laws that restrict access to abortion may result in worsening economics for expectant mothers. Far too often legislators forget about the underlying causes of the disparities that minority women face. Goyal notes, "HB2 led to a disproportionate reduction in the abortion rate among Hispanic women in Texas, including those living in counties with a closed clinic or traveling long distances to obtain in-clinic abortion care"(Goyal,2020). In conclusion, when women are denied the right to a safe, legal abortion woman look for unsafe ways to terminate their pregnancies. Unnecessary abortion restrictions place a heavy burden on women ‘s physical and emotional state. Unsafe abortions take place when untrained personnel perform abortions. Unsafe abortions are performed in an environment that does not meet minimal medical standards, which puts women at risk. It is my opinion; Roe vs Wade has been in place since 1973 and has been proven to protected women’s constitutional right to an

abortion. If Roe vs Wade was overturned successfully women would lose their right to an abortion. It would be a major setback for women’s rights and abortion law would be dictated by each state. Women who seek an abortion are more likely to achieve their life goals, gain financial certainty, and have a child later that she can better provide for.
