Description

Joshua Dillard October 24, 2020 HUM-100 Humans need to express themselves through artifacts because oftentimes these artifacts are created as ordinary pieces of work for something that the creator may do for a living. According to the module overview in module two artifacts are created for a variety of different reasons but the most common being for financial gain or religious reasons. These works only become artifacts later through time and are then see as valuable documents to look into the past as the creators would often create works based on their experiences, their surroundings, or their societal expectations at the time good or bad. Creative expression is linked to one’s current culture because culture defines your experiences, thoughts, and emotions towards the world and various other subjects like race. How someone is brought up to think the way they do relies on how culture has shaped their society at that moment. Culture helps form societal norms for every aspect of life, social expectations, religious expectations, and what is considered right and wrong is all motivated by what that specific culture believes in. Culture evolves over generations and this societal norm shift is most prevalent in generations where older generations typically act or believe differently than those of the newer generations. An example of this is located in the module four overview, Ralph Ellison wrote Invisible Man due to the racial discrimination from the 1930s during a time where southern culture expected white Americans to hate people of color or spread misinformation about them. It is also said that the book was written to attempt to incite change in America. Creative expression has the potential to affect any number of issues including issues that we face today. An example of this comes from my chosen artifact, the novel Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, in which accurate depictions of southern culture and the inclusion of racial slurs to fit the time disgusted many but brought light to what life was actually like during that time. This helped contribute to change because some people finally realized the horrors of what they use to be part of thanks to the disgust they felt while reading the book. Something similar could be done today since we still face some issues of racial discrimination in our country which is most prominently associated with the justice system. Artifacts typically do not enable immediate change but supply a lasting effect on culture and society that tend to affect newer generations who eventually create new social and cultural norms....
