Description

HUM 100 Project 1 Artifact Chart Although you will work on various assignments throughout the course to support you in completing this assignment, this project is not due until Week 6. Artifact What is your chosen artifact? Sinahi

II.

I.

Describe the artifact When describing the Sinahi it is a Tribal Necklace. The main component is the half-moon shape in the middle of the necklace made from the giant sea clam. The giant sea clam shell can be shaped to be smoothed or engraved with lateral lines. Continuing up both sides of the necklace you have various smooth beads made from shell, bone dyed in different colors. The creator of the necklace delicately smoothed each shell to similar sizes and roundness. The clasp of the necklace is held together with a simple look and shell combination for easy putting on and taking off.

Choose elements of the artifact that you believe are most important to how you experience it and explain why. For instance, what particularly catches your senses or makes you want to keep experiencing it? Does the choice of medium impact your experience?

The elements of the artifact that I believe are most important on how experience are going to vary by each person. This artifact has different meanings to different people. I believe the mana that artifacts puts off within the person is how you experience it. The Sinahi represents your great leadership within your village through your accomplishments. But today it still worn so the Chamorro people can connect with their ancestors.

Assumptions about your artifact

III.

State your opinion on what you believe is the purpose of this artifact and the success of the creator in achieving the purpose. For instance, what message do you believe the creator is trying to express, and is that message successfully expressed?

I believe the Sinahi was a social status among the Ancient Chamorro people. The Sinahi showed your status among the hierarchy within in your tribe. I believe the creators were successful in achieving their purpose as the most accomplished Chamorro warriors wore the Sinahi within their respected villages. The strongest warriors and villages chiefs had the biggest Sinahi’s which symbolized their greatest achievements

IV.

Discuss how the artifact reflects the culture (or context) in which it exists. Be sure to address what aspects of culture have relevance for this artifact: politics, history, religion, social perceptions, technology, media, education, and so on. In other words, how do the artifact and its culture interrelate? For instance, how would a particular form of body modification reflect the urban culture in which you encountered it?

The Sinahi was both used for social perceptions and history/religious purposes. As for history/religious The Sinahi is a half-moon shape in which the Chamorro people were known for using the 13 moon phases as their calendar. They used the moon calendar to help them harvest and too know when to fish the right types of fish.

V.

Use the artifact to discuss how acts of creative expression impact and are impacted by the people and situations that surround it. How might the artifact and the person who created it have impacted each other? For instance, how might the geographic location where the artifact was made, the materials used to create the artifact, the medium of the creative process, or the environment where the artifact is displayed influence the creator’s life or future creative work? How might the artifact and the culture or context in which it was created have impacted each other? For instance, does the artifact add to the understanding of the culture from which it was created? What contributions does it make to continuing on a dialogue about that culture and the importance of its artifacts?

The creators of the Sinahi were influenced by their voyager mentality. They created the Sinahi based of their everyday life necessity which was the ocean. If the Sinahi was never created there would have never been a social standing amongst the Ancient Chamorro people. This is my interpretation of their modern government. The contributions the Sinahi makes to today’s cultures is not that relevant as before. Wearing the Sinahi now represents a great accomplishment but does not show your status among the people of Guam.

VI.

Questions: Pose questions you have after thinking deeply about this artifact. What more do you want to know regarding:

A. The relationship between human culture and expression B. Question 1: How was hierarchy established before the Sinahi? Question 2: Does the Sinahi get passed down from generation to generation? C. Your personal assumptions about artifacts of this sort and why they exist D. Question 1: How was the Chamorro culture influenced after the creation of the Sinahi? Question 2: Where did the idea of the Sinah come from? (Which Micronesian culture)? C. How your values have shaped and are shaped by your expression and that of others Question 1: How might wearing the Sinahi shape the values of wearers in the time that the Sinahi was created? Question 2: Would the Sinah have the same impact on the values of wearers if the item was still worn in today’s culture?

E. The relationship between the possible intent of the creator and your own interpretation of its meaning F. Question 1: What type of jewelry do the woman of these tribes wear that have great accomplishments? Question 2: Why did the creator of the Sinahi choose the half-moon shape? Instead of the other shapes that represent the Chamorro culture such as the Latte Stone?

VII.

Speculate on how you would go about answering these questions. For instance, what sorts of things would you study about these kinds of artifacts and their contexts that might begin addressing these questions?

Too find answers to these questions you probably have to start with Spanish history as they were some of the first inhabitants of Guam. From there find subject matter experts on this artifact who can dive a little deeper into the knowledge that you can’t find on the internet as Chamorro history wasn’t really written down before the Spanish arrived. If I still required more information on the SInahi I could seek the knowledge of some elders on Guam who have had Sinahi’s passed down throughout the years....
