First Draft of Critical Analysis Essay

The writing Mother Tongue by Amy Tan look into all the difficulties and struggles that Asian-American bilingual woman face in today’s society. The author, Amy Tan, talks about all of the struggles that she faced growing up and into her adult life. She goes over the struggles that her mother faced while trying to learn a new language and trying to navigate her way through a new country. While her tone is sometimes humorous and captivating, it still clarifies several serious issues. The society that we live in views people from other countries or those that are of different nationalities as foreign and they look down upon them. Those who read Tan’s article hopefully will have a better understanding of the struggles that Tan herself went through and some of the struggles that other immigrants may face living in our country. Early in the article Tan talks about all the stereotypes that she had to face being an AsianAmerican in her school. In her school she was pushed to work harder and do better when it came to her math classes. This is just one of the stereotypes she faced in her school system by her teachers and other students. Tan also discusses in her article how she notices the differences in how she communicates with her mother compared to how she communicates with everyone else in her immediate environment. While growing up Tan had to deal with the feeling of being ashamed of her mother due to her mother not being able to speak English as well as her or anyone else. Tan said, “I was ashamed of her English, I believed her English reflected the quality of what she had to say.” She explains how there were times in her life that she had to pretend to be her mother while talking on the phone to other people due to her mother not being able to communicate well and people having issues not being able to understand her. She discusses several different examples of how the English language has many different variations when spoken and how her own English has evolved over time by interacting with others and how the accepted version used by Americans is far different than her mother’s broken English. Due to her mother’s fragmented English, she faced a lot of criticism and prejudice that affected her day to day life. To Tan her mother’s broken English symbolizes home because it’s the English that she grew up with, however, her mother’s English also symbolizes the limitations of immigrants in America and the challenges they have to face to be accepted....
