Description

SPE2004 – Growth and Motor Development Assessment 3 – FMS Report All questions must be answered individually. 1. Summarise the results of the skill assessment sheets using a graph that allows for comparisons between the year levels and between the sexes.

2. Based on the skill assessment, which performance criteria was the easiest for the students to perform? Was it different between the year levels?

Each student from both year levels were able to keep their eyes focused in direction of travel throughout the dodge as both sets of data displayed 100% success rate in this category.

2a. Give 2 possible explanations of why this performance criteria were easier for students? 1.

Due to the task not requiring a long attention span. We can assume that the short duration to perform a dodge using our most dominant sense in vision was an easy task for the students.

2. Another explanation could be that vision is developed and used every day at a very young age and that the students already have the abilities with there eye sight to perform this skill adequately. Also, compared to the other tasks, having the eyes focused only has one barrier to completion (not being focused) compared to other task that require multiple precise movements with a few variables that can lead to failed execution.

3. Based on the skill assessment, which performance criteria was the most difficult for the students to perform? Was it different between the year levels?

Change of direction of one step Provided grades 1 and 2 the most challenge as the percentages were the lowest in this category at 46%. Although, the grade 3 and 4 group had most difficulty with Body lowered during change of direction at 64%.

3a. Give 2 possible explanations of why the performance criteria was more difficult for students? 1. As these criteria relies more on co-ordination the grade one and two may have struggled due to no previous experience of the specific movement as they progress from the emerging elementary stage to the proficient stage. As for grade 3 and 4 the act of dodging according to (Fundamental motor skills, 1996) by this stage in the student’s development we can see that by the end of grade 4 the skill should be mastered. At 64% it is the lowest score for grade 3 and 4 although more than half the students have completed the skill which could be a result of having more grade 4 students in the class that have mastered the skill.

2. Another reason these results could have returned is due to the sporting and exercise of each individual student. If some kids play 3 sports and others play none, we would expect those that play sports will have more developed movements depending on the sport they play. For example: if one student plays AFL and one doesn’t you would expect the AFL student to be able to perform a dodge movement more effectively as dodging and weaving around opponents is a crucial aspect in the game of AFL.

4. How did the performance of males compare to the performance of females? Males out performed females in most of the tasks except being equal on the eyes focused task.

4a. Give 2 possible explanations of why you did (or did not) observe sex differences in skill performance?

One explanation for this could be that males are more likely to play more sports than females according to ("Sport and children", 2015) More boys (70 per cent) than girls (56 per cent) participate in sports. With males more likely to play more sports we can assume with the data received that males have taken their skills from external sports and transferred them into the dodge movement effectively.

Another explanation for the given results could numbers in sports such as AFL, Basketball and female dominated like netball and gymnastics movements to be able to manoeuvre through effectively

be that Males dominant the sporting Soccer, these sports compared to the require a drastic amount of dodging opposing players and play the sport

5. Did the skill assessment allow us to measure development? If you wanted to measure developmental changes over time what changes would you make to the skill assessment? It did not allow us to measure development as the test was only completed once and did not give us adequate information to show development as no former tests were done for comparison. I don’t believe it allowed us to measure development as we would need to do the testing 2 or 3 times and compare results to be able to measure improvement or deterioration in the certain categories.
