French & Raven: The Bases of Social Power

Power is not a quality, it is a relationship. Student A will have power over student B if he has a basis of power. Outside of this relationship, student A may not have any sort of power.

Five bases of social power Reward power: Based on the ability to reward ⇒ manager has control over resources so she can decide to give a bonus, promotion, day off…. It has nothing to do with the personality of the manager and more with the organizational context in which the employer and employees work. Coercive power: Person A will have power over Person B if he expects Person A to punish him in case of disobedience. Legitimate power: The power of person A over person B steams from the values that person B has internalized which dictate that person A has a legitimate right to influence person B. Employees end up accepting the authority structure of the organization.

Referent power : Person A has referent power over person B if he identifies with person A ⇒ person A is idolized by person B so he'll do anything to be accepted/validated by him. Expert power: Person A has power over person B if he believes person A is knowledgeable, has experience and technical skills. You are compelled to believe them because you trust their expert knowledge. Power ≠ Authority Mintzberg + French & Raven both provide frameworks for looking at how the influence that managers may have in organizations....
