Description

Mental Health Campus Resource: A book Describe the resource: A book entitled “ABC of Mental Health” (second edition) is written by Teifion Davies and Tom Craig, et al. This book is located in the university’s McLaughlin Library, available in both electronic and hard copies. It is also available for purchase on Amazon, Indigo and other websites. The book is based around the recognition, diagnosis and management process of mental illnesses in a safe and successful manner with the inclusion of drug treatment selection. This book contains information on the different categories of mental disorders and the prominence in age, race and socioeconomic categories. This text is mainly treated as a resource for doctors, counsellors and other mental health professionals but can also be used as an aid for students or the average person looking to learn more about the topic. Teifion Davies, one of the authors of the book, is a professor of social psychiatry at King’s College, London Institute of Psychiatry and conducts research in the areas of psychiatry, abnormal psychology and health psychology. The second author, Tom Craig, is a senior lecturer in community psychiatry, also based at King’s College London, Institute of Psychiatry. Some examples of the different chapters included in the book include “Mental Health Assessment”, “Addiction and Dependence”, “Mental Health in a Multiethnic Society” and “Psychological Treatments” just to name a few. Internet Resource #1: Mind Shift Describe the resource: Mind Shift is a free smartphone app that I have personally used myself. This app uses strategies based on the scientifically-proven Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) methods and is more-so focused around feelings of anxiety, worry and panic. The way the app works is that it allows you to log exactly how you are thinking or feeling, and then provides you with solutions and coping methods to try and change the way you deal with anxiety symptoms, as well as how you think about and perceive challenging situations. There are also a number of motivational quotes and words of encouragement to help keep you going, as well as relaxation techniques. A benefit of the app is that it provides information as to the causes of anxiety symptoms, and explains why you may be feeling a specific way. The Mind Shift app was developed by The Anxiety Disorders Association of British Columbia, a nonprofit organization consisting of consumers and mental health advocates that work side by side with the Provincial Health Services Authority. The app is one hundred percent Canadian and is targeted on young adults and their experiences with anxiety, all with the goal of assisting with the relief process of the experience.

Internet Resource #2: https://cmha.ca/ Describe the resource: The Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) has a website with information on events, ways to volunteer, news, and other domains of the mental health world but more importantly they have a section strictly dedicated to the many different disorders, each with its own individual PDF document. Examples of these documents include “Children, Youth, and Anxiety”, “Coping with Loneliness”, “Eating Disorders” and every other topic imaginable as well as strategies to help others and yourself. There is also a “Mental Health Meter”, “Work-life Balance Quiz” and a “What’s Your Stress Index” quiz, all which assist in pinpointing characteristics of a specific mental health disorder or if you are simply missing a piece in your lifestyle by targeting something you may not be aware you are dealing with, and providing solutions on how to cope or overcome.

Stress Campus Resource: Relaxation & Stress Management Skills Training Program Describe the resource: A stress management workshop located directly on campus, meeting in UC room 332 from 5:30-6:30pm on every Tuesday and Thursday for six weeks. Fees include $40 for University of Guelph students and $240 for all others. The program began on January 29th and ended on March 14th, but similar or the same program will take place in the upcoming Fall semester as well as future semesters. According to the program website, www.selfregulationskills.ca, the goal of the twelve sessions are to “maximize the opportunity to practice and develop strong skills in releasing body tension, and calming and focusing the mind” as well as “skill acquisition and educations about stress management and high performance”. This program is funded by Student Wellness, the department of the university responsible for Student Accessibility Services, Counselling Services, Wellness Education, the Health and Performance Centre and Health Services.

Internet Resource #1: https://www.7cups.com/ Describe the resource: 7 Cups is an online counselling resource for individuals combatting stress, anxiety and a variety of others including LGBTQ+ groups. Users can choose to consult a professional, certified therapist or a trained listener. Additionally, there is an option to join a support chat room based on specific categories in order to seek help and share information with those users going through similar experiences. According to the website, 7 Cups has “180 professional therapists, over 300,000 trained listeners” and has “helped over 25 million people”. Online chats are free and available to use 24/7, with complete anonymity at no cost. If choosing to consult someone on a more professional basis, users can pay $33 per week to speak with a licensed therapist. This online resource was developed by psychologist Glen Moriarty who states that his motivation for creating an online therapy forum was due to the question, “How can I make being heard a reality for everyone?” In 2016, 7 Cups received the Stanford Medicine X Award, an award designed to recognize exceeding accomplishments from both companies and individuals whom “share our values and believe in the value of good design in health care.” This award is a significant indicator that this resource is qualified and demonstrates an expertise to provide therapy and counselling support to its users.

Internet Resource #2: https://greatergood.berkeley.edu/quizzes/take_quiz/stress_and_anxiety Describe the resource: This resource is a free, online stress and anxiety quiz provided by the University of California Berkeley’s Greater Good Science Centre (GGSC) website and was developed by Peter Lovibond at the University of New South Wales. The goal of the quiz is to rank your stress and anxiety-based behaviour as well as answer a few personal questions. Once all questions are completed, the user will receive a score as well as resource suggestions to combat their specific stress. I took the quiz myself and a few examples of the sixteen behaviour statements included “I tended to overreact to situations”, “I felt scared without any good reason” and “I found it difficult to tolerate interruptions to what I was doing” where I was asked to rate my experiences from “did not apply to me at all” all the way up the scale to “applied to me very much, most of the time.” The last five questions of the quiz are personal and included age, gender identity, how often the user meditates, current employment status and category of work. I chose to keep my results private, but I was given a variety of seemingly valuable methods, resources and words of encouragement to use in order to help relieve some of the stresses I am experiencing.

Alcohol and/or Tobacco Campus Resource: Student Counselling Services Describe the resource: Counselling services are located directly on campus (UC 3rd floor) and are available and free of charge for all students to take advantage of. When it comes to alcohol and/or tobacco use, whether it is regarding yourself, a friend, or a family member, the team of professional counsellors and staff are there for individuals to speak with if they feel as though they are being faced with an addiction. Students can either choose to book an appointment with a counsellor (via telephone at 519-824-4120 x53244 or by email at [email protected]), Monday through Friday from the hours of 8:15am to 4:15pm. For more urgent needs, students can drop into the counselling office without an appointment from Monday through Friday between the hours of 12:30pm and 3:30pm. Crisis lines and after hour resources are also available, including “Here 24/7” (1844-HERE247) and “Crisis Text Line” (Text UofG to 686868), for those who prefer not to speak on the phone. Student Counselling Services are there for a reason - to assist and support students with any or all problems they may be facing and subsequently having an impact on their mental health, physical health and also academic success.

Internet Resource #1: http://www.checkyourdrinking.net/CYD/CYDScreenerP1_0.aspx Describe the resource: This internet resource is a free survey entitled “The Check Your Drinking (CYD) Survey” and is an online tool designed to help individuals or their family members answer questions about their own personal drinking habits in order to determine how their alcohol intake as well as money spent on alcohol compares on average with other users. The goal of the survey is to assist individuals in acknowledging the extent of their habit and how much they are spending to support it, possibly providing motivation to turn their life around (if addictive behaviours apply). Check Your Drinking was developed and created by Evolution Health Systems Inc. which is “a research and development company dedicated to developing and supporting community-based interactive disease management programs”. This survey is strictly meant for educational purposes and is not intended to replace the advice or information provided by healthcare professionals, although the results given can be given to an individuals physician as reference and the next steps can be taken if decided upon.

Internet Resource #2: http://www.webtribes.com/ Describe the resource: Similar to the online forum “7 Cups” provided in the stress worksheet, this resource, WebTribes, is an internet resource bringing individuals and communities together in order to share their struggles and experiences with a variety of mental illnesses - including addition. WebTribes states their mission statement as “With the belief that communicating, sharing, and connecting with others in your community will have a positive affect on your healing and your life”, offering a directory of professional therapists to work with as well as web hosting for said therapists and other mental health professionals. Users can also choose to seek help from self-help support groups and wellness resources for free, in order to connect with other people experiencing similar situations.
