Connect™: This is a companion website created by the publisher and customized by your instructor. A student access code for this site is included with your textbook if you purchase your book new from the FTCC Bookstore. Otherwise, you will be required to purchase access to this site separately. A direct link to purchase from the publisher will be available in your Blackboard site the first day of class and will include access to an electronic version of the textbook. It is not recommended that access codes be purchased from third party provides, as access codes are course specific and must be unused. Grading Scale: FTCC grades are based on a 4.0 grading system. Each grade is assigned a “gradepoint equivalent” in quality points for each term credit hour scheduled. The grade point average (GPA) is determined by dividing the total of quality points earned by the number of term hours scheduled. Letter Grade Equivalent Grade Point Equivalent Numerical Grade 90-100 A-Excellent 4 grade points per credit hour 80-89 B-Good 3 grade points per credit hour 70-79 C-Average 2 grade points per credit hour 60-69 D-Below Average 1 grade point per credit hour 0-59 F-Failure 0 grade point The complete grading scale description may be found in the current FTCC Student Handbook under “Academic Information.” For assistance with calculating GPA, use the GPA Calculator (opens in new window) [URL: http://forms.faytechcc.edu/calculators/index.html

Course Requirements/Methods of Evaluation: Your grade in this course will reflect the execution, submission, and quality of the work you produce. Letter grades will be determined on the following weighted categories: (For a detailed description of the grade categories, please see “How This Course Works” in Blackboard.) Departmental Policies: The Science Division observes the following policies: • No major test grade will be dropped. • Fully online classes include webcam-proctored tests/exams. Use of Respondus Lockdown Browser or Proctorio is required and are NOT compatible with Chromebook. Specific details on proctored tests/exams are posted in the Blackboard course. • All students must take the comprehensive final examination. Students who are absent from the exam and had an “F” average prior to the exam will receive an “F” in the course. Students who were in good standing prior to the exam, are absent from the exam, and are unable to schedule a make-up exam before course grades are due to the registrar’s office, will receive an “I” (Incomplete) grade. • An "I" (Incomplete) grade may be given at the discretion of the instructor when all course requirements have not been satisfied. Contact the instructor as soon as possible to arrange completion of the course. Incomplete grades expire according to a schedule published by the registrar and are automatically changed to a grade of “F” if the course is not completed by the expiration date. FTCC Safety Protocols for COVID-19 Following College policy, all students are required to engage in appropriate behavior to protect the health and safety of the community, including wearing a facial covering properly, maintaining social distance (at least 6 feet from others at all times), and using hand sanitizer/engaging in frequent hand washing. Upon entering any campus building, a temperature check will be performed. Anyone with a temperature of 100.4 oF or higher will not be permitted to remain on campus. Per campus guidelines, students should stay home when you are sick, when your temperature is above normal or if you suspect you have been exposed to COVID-19. It is the student’s responsibility to communicate any possible exposure or symptoms of COVID-19 to their instructor immediately. Full details for COVID-19 campus procedures can be found on the FTCC website (opens new window). In the event that an increase in local COVID-19 infections necessitates a change in course format, face-to-face or hybrid courses may be moved to fully online. Any details regarding this change will be posted in your course Blackboard site and emailed to students.

Biology Department Attendance Policy The College believes that when students attend class regularly they are demonstrating responsibility and commitment to their education. Students must be in attendance during the first 10 percent of the class to be considered enrolled. A student will be withdrawn from a course when absences exceed 20% of the total course hours, or 14 consecutive calendar days, whichever comes first. Attendance in online educational courses is defined as a graded activity. Absences due to late registration are counted as regular absences. In addition to the general college attendance policy, students in science classes that meet face-to-face are subject to the following rule regarding late arrival to class or leaving class before dismissal by the instructor: • If fewer than 15 minutes of a class hour are missed due to late arrival or leaving early, the student will be marked tardy. If a student accumulates three tardy designations, the three tardies will be converted into one hour of absence. • If more than 15 minutes of a class hour are missed due to late arrival or leaving early, the student will be marked absent for that class hour. • Please do not call the Biology Department office or the instructor’s office to report a tardy or absent event. If you come in late, it is your responsibility to notify the instructor that you are present. You must do this immediately after the end of lecture (or on break). Please do not request at a later date to mark you present. • There are no excused absences, therefore please do not inquire to make an exception for you based on unexpected emergencies. Make sure to check Blackboard for the number of missed hours. • Additionally, the following policies apply specifically to this class: • Only one make-up is allowed for a single module exam throughout the course. Make-up of the module exam should be arranged with the instructor in advance if possible and completed by the student within 5 days of the exam date. Preferably the make-up exam should be scheduled prior to the exam date to allow for timely module test class feedback. • No student will be permitted to retake an exam or quiz. • Lab Quizzes will be given during the beginning of each lab meeting. Students that arrive late will not be given extra time to complete their quiz. Students who arrive after the quiz period has ended will receive a zero for that quiz. • Your lowest two (2) Lab Quiz scores will be dropped before your final grade is computed. • LearnSmart assignments and Chapter quizzes cannot be accepted for credit after their due date. However, your lowest two (2) LearnSmart scores and two (2) lowest Chapter quizzes will be dropped before your final grade is computed.

Make-up Policy: Late academic work submission procedures are as follows: 1. Academic assignments and projects are due by the scheduled/published dates. 2. In general, there is a 10 percent penalty for each business day that an assignment or project is late. Assignments may be submitted no more than one week late without prior approval from your instructor. 3. No late work will be accepted after the 90 percent date of the term without an incomplete grade approval from your instructor. 4. Certain course activities may not be eligible for late submission after the conclusion of the week, module, or unit. These include, but are not limited to, discussion boards, quizzes, and exams. 5. We know that extenuating circumstances can sometime interfere with timely submission of your work. Be sure to tell your instructor right away if you are going to be late with a submission. 6. Extenuating circumstances include, but are not limited to, personal/family member hospitalization, family member death, a severe weather event, a natural disaster, and an active military situation that prevents timely submission of work. Computer-related issues, internet connectivity, and account blocks are generally not considered extenuating circumstances. 7. You may request an extension or alternative arrangement, preferably prior to the due date, but your request does not automatically result in a waiver of the due date or of the penalties for late submissions. Your instructor may also require you to provide documentation of the reason. If your instructor determines that an extension is warranted, they will provide you with the expectations for your submission.
