Description

Go React - Ladder of Listening Reflection This Ladder of Listening activity is designed to help you expand your personal reflections about how your listening habits affect your conversations and relationships. You will be recording a video and posting it for other students to view. The Ladder of Listening can set the stage for entrance into the Cycle of Value. The Ladder of Listening has five rungs representing five types of listening: Bioreaction, Content, Compassion, Essential Purpose and Intersection. Review the materials and videos in the course of study about the Ladder of Listening prior to completing this activity. Choose a person at home or work to complete this activity. It can be a friend, family member of colleague. Ask the person to talk to you for 5 minutes about something that is unsettled in their life or something that is driving them crazy. Set a timer so the speaker knows they have plenty of time. ● As they speak, focus on the middle rungs of the ladder of listening: ○ Content - listen for facts and information, listen for observations instead of evaluations, ask a fact -based question that has no judgement. ○ Compassion - as you gather facts, start thinking about what the speaker cares about. What emotions might they be feeling? ○ Essential Purpose - as you consider those facts and feelings, start thinking about the needs the speaker has. What needs are met and which needs are unmet? What do these needs tell you about what the person is really trying to say? ● When the person is done or when the 5 minute timer goes off, check in with the speaker and focus on the following questions: ○ Content - I heard you talking about these facts. Is that right? ○ Compassion - I was wondering if you were feeling (state a feeling word) OR it seems like these certain things are really important to you. ○ Essential Purpose - Were you feeling (state the feeling word) because you have these needs? OR I heard you mention these things which sounded like needs; is that correct?

● After the activity, reflect on your own listening:

○ What you are learning about yourself?

○ What you you noticing about your own listening style?

○ How might your usual method for listening appear to others?

○ How might your listen affect the outcome of a conversation?

○ How are you hoping to change how you listen or how you connect with others?

Record a short video reflecting on listening and what you learned from this listening activity. You will be recording a video, posting it for other students to view and will provide peer feedback to 3 other students....
