Yagnelly Cintrón de Jesús Prof. Janine Santiago INGL 329-002 Gender Evolution Project Reflection “The evolution of sex is the hardest problem in evolutionary biology” (Maynard). In this oral project, I interviewed 57- years- old Nitza Rodriguez, who is an example of the evolution of the gender feminine. Nitza was a young mom, she had her child at the age of 15. Rodriguez studied and looked after her children at the time. Nitza is not the typical women who only took care of the house without any high level of study.

In the interview, I mention few important key words for example, feminism, gender, evolution, independent and roles. Feminism is “the belief in the social, economic, and political equality of the sexes. Although largely originating in the West, feminism is manifested worldwide and is represented by various institutions committed to activity on behalf of women’s rights and interests” (Burkett). Gender is “Either of the two sexes (male and female), especially when considered with reference to social and cultural differences rather than biological ones. The term is also used more broadly to denote a range of identities that do not correspond to established ideas of male and female” (Oxford dictionaries). Evolution is “process of gradual change that takes place over many generations, during which species of animals, plants, or insects slowly change some of their physical characteristics” (Collins). Independent is “not influenced or controlled in any way by other people, events, or things” (Cambridge Dictionary). Finally, roles

is “a socially expected behavior pattern usually determined by an individual's status in a particular society” (Merriam-Webster).

Women in the United States now complete more college degrees than men, the distribution of college majors among college graduates remains unequal, with women about two‐thirds as likely as men to major in business or science. “We develop and estimate a dynamic, overlapping generation’s model of human capital investments and labor supply. We allow for specific college major choices, instead of aggregating these choices to the education level. Results show that changes in skill prices, higher schooling costs, and gender‐ specific changes in home value were each important to the long‐ term trends” (Wiswall). We can see that the priority of the women has change. She no longer wants to have a family first, but to have a professional career and then in a future when the women is an independent person and archive what she wanted, the women star thinking in settle down and gave her family. Clearly we see the evolution of this gender while the generations go by.

The sciences considers recent attempts to explain gendered difference in human behavior by an appeal to evolutionary theory, particularly in the context of the recent programed of 'evolutionary psychology'. It argues that the fundamental assumptions of this programed are unsupported and implausible, and the attempt it offers of providing a universal account of human behavior does little or nothing to counter the prima face diversity of gender difference. “A more sophisticated understanding of evolutionary theory suggests that we should see gender as

developing out of a complex and variable cascade of interactions between biology and environment, rather than as the expression of species-wide biological universals” (Dupre).

This oral project for me means the confirmation that the woman has not only evolved intellectually, but she has been socially accepted as a person capable of defending herself, becoming independent and assuming roles as well as the man. Personally, I liked this project because it gave me the opportunity to meet a wonderful person, know about its history, knowledge and know how she has adapted to today society. Know that the woman have evolved gives me some satisfaction because I know that I do not have to depend on anyone, much less follow the rules imposed by society....
