Essay on photos depicting gender fluent items...

Description

Dylan Tauss SOC 100: Introduction to Sociology Professor Carolyn Corrado 4 April 2019 Gender Photo Essay The Pink Football

This is a pink and sparkly football. Football is considered to be a physical and is generally made up of male athletes, however that doesn’t mean that girls don’t enjoy playing football either. This specific ball is marketed towards girls because of the color and design. This image shows that football could be enjoyed by both boys and girls. Nonetheless, girls are expected to use this football instead of the traditional leather one.

Shampoo… For Women?

This is a shampoo that is generally used by women. Of course men may also use it, but I believe that gender is embedded in hair products like shampoo. In my experience, women like to take care of their hair much more than men do. The words ‘Dream Care’ also make the product sound more feminine, which means they are marketing towards a female audience.

Necklace for Men

Girls are usually the ones that wear beautiful and jewelry embedded necklaces. However, society doesn’t really let men wear those types of necklaces, so instead they wear things like this. The fake shark tooth featured on the necklace represents strength and other desirable male traits. To be honest though, from my perspective shark tooth necklaces are very cool.

Nail Polish

Nail Polish is something generally used by girls and not guys. I rarely see men wearing nail polish unless it was for a specific reason. Society expects women to look beautiful in many ways, and nails are just one of them. Society doesn’t expect men to wear nail polish or any other beauty products. It is fascinating that this one item is almost never used by men, and is always used by women.

Gender by Razor

Here we have two separate razors: one is used by men, and the other is used by women. The men’s razor is in a cool black and grey color with both green and blue at the top. While the women’s razor is in pink, purple, and white. The male razor looks slick and rugged while the female razor looks gentle and smooth. Gender norms are so clear between these two images and basically contribute to the stereotypical gender standards. My photo essays consists of images that support and go against gender roles. There are certain things that could be perceived as a ‘male’ or ‘female’ object but in reality it could be either or. Society tells us what is acceptable depending on our gender, which isn’t fair because maybe a little boy does like to play with dolls. Maybe a little girl likes to throw the football around. These gender norms create a wall and restrict the usage of controversial gender items.. For instance, Why does there need to be different types of shampoo for men and women? Why do girls footballs have to be pink and have tons of sparkles? Just because something is a certain color or looks a certain way it should be marked as masculine or feminine....
