Gender Revolution summary with Katie Couric...

Description

Gender Revolution This was the first time watching this documentary and I have to say it was very interesting and informative. The documentary followed Katie Couric and her journey of becoming knowledgeable about the Gender Revolution. She talked to many people and families about their journey and how they got to where they are today. The main topics that Couric was informed about were how there are three ways gender can be expressed. These ways are gender expression, gender identity, and your biological sex. All of these combined pave the way about how people view themselves and why there are other genders besides the stereotypical male and female. An example of this is when Couric met with Brian Douglass. Brian was born a girl, names Diane. But because of exposure of excessive amounts of testosterone in the womb, the doctors told the parents that Brian would have to have surgery. Brian is an example of someone that is intersex, meaning that an individual has both male and female reproductive parts. Because of this, Brian grew up as Diane but did not feel as if he was in the right body. During his 30s, he found out that he was born a girl, and decided to live the rest of his life as a man. This example shows that just by having surgery and changing the sex of an individual, it does not mean that mentally the person will adhere to their given gender. Another example that Couric saw was Ellie Ford. Ellie was born a boy, but at the age of 4, she decided that she did not feel right being a boy and wanted to be a girl. This meant that Ellie is transgender, meaning that a person’s gender identity does not correlate to their sex at birth. Ellie’s parents are giving her the opportunity to be able to make her own decision of what she wants to be, a boy or a girl. Even though some people say that this is a phase that Ellie is going through, her parents know that because of the way she acts and her characteristics, that it is not a phase and that Ellie is choosing to be who she wants to be. This documentary is connected to this course because even though this course is about

women’s studies, it does not only focus on women. This course also focusses on gender, intersectionality, equality, LGBTQ+, etc. This documentary focused on almost all of these since every person that Couric interviewed had a different story and a different experience with their gender. Also, I think that gender is a big concept that we discussed in class since some people are still not informed about the many possibilities of gender that are possible. One discussion that really stands out is when we talked about gender in the workplace. Since many people are not informed about the different types of genders, some people are sexist and look down upon people that are not the stereotypical male and female. Many of these people are from an older generation, where it was looked down upon to be anything other than male or female. It is up us as more informed individuals to teach others that it is not “bad” to be part of the LGBTQ+ community and that all people are the same. It is also important to stop doctors from performing surgeries on babies that are intersex and all non-consenting surgeries in general. It should be up to the child to be what he/she/they want to be. This is because you cannot change the biological sex of a person and expect them to continue as that given sex. Gender is a mental concept too, which should also be taken into account....
